some thoughts re: race in the raven cycle

All of the discourse around race in TRC has made me think a lot about how Gansey’s experiences and relationship with his family re: mental health and just being an oddball resonate with me as a WOC (also I talked about this with @clawsnbeak so if you have anything to add, go for it bb, you are a much better writer than I am).

Gansey’s character reminds me a lot of several of the black men that I know; intelligent, from well off families but still working very hard to project a likeable, unthreatening, perfect/untouchable persona to the outside world out of fear of both judgement of them as an individual and the knowledge that people will apply any shortcomings that they see in an individual to the entire group. His entire character is based around code switching which I would like to explore more but I’m not sure how to articulate it right now so yeah. 

But the main thing that I really relate to is the way that his family relates to his mental health as it very much mirrors the relationship that I have with my own father. It’s not that he doesn’t care about me or recognize that I am hurting but to him mental health is something that should be kept quiet and not acknowledged. A lot of it comes from growing up in a world that he knows isn’t kind to people who look like me and wanting to shield me from the struggles that come with being both black and “different”, but to outsiders it very much comes across as “shut up and be normal or people will Talk”. There is a lot of stigma around mental health in a lot of communities and that combined with the very real fear of negative judgement from the outside world often leads to a culture in which these things aren’t acknowledged at all. 

I am having trouble putting a lot of this into words right now so hopefully I will make a much better follow up post at some point but yeah.
