As a man, however, Scrooge takes his "melancholy dinner in his usual melancholy tavern" poring over his beloved banker's-book. He continues to work as, Dickens suggests, is his daily habit. 🎁 Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' was published in 1843. It is widely credited with popularising then-new, now established, Christmas traditions that we continue to observe to this day. The Victorians were enraptured by the festivities of the season. In the C17th, Christmas was prohibited by Puritans as pagan blasphemy. With their increased wealth and dispersion of the family unit, Industrial Revolution Victorians celebrated the re-emergence of celebration! These are the books I’ve read in January. I’d never read anything Christmassy by Dickens so I loved that and I might make it a new Christmas tradition! Re-read Rose Daughter for the first time in a few years as we are teaching fairytale retellings at school so it fitted nicely. I had bought Red Queen years ago on kindle, but then didn’t really think it would be my cup of tea, but I loved it so much that I have ended up buying a box set of all the books!
