Sentinel Figure, Dick Martin

Several of Shakespeare's plays include watchers, gate-keepers, minor characters who discuss events and display great insight into things to come. The idea of a sentinel, watcher or protector. A figure that can see through the everyday and beyond the obvious. Someone who communicates on an emotional level. The sculptures are made with a direct honesty to the nature of the material. Clay is a wonderful material that can be pulled, squashed, shaped and squeezed. It takes an impression like no other material and, being a basic "earth" material, it is a joy to work with. Natural and manufactured objects are used to make impressions and produce strong textures. The work shows the way as it progresses into a finished piece. The hand becomes as important as the eye and the mind. I use white stoneware clay and make using slab and coil building techniques. The work is then fired between 1100 and 1200c in an electric kiln. Decorated with oxides, engobes and glazes. 24ct gold-leaf on glasses. Figure is approximately 24cm high, standard is approximately 47cm high. Each piece is handbuilt and unique. Top, Dick Martin

The inspiration for this painting comes from the components of atomic nuclei as investigated by the LHC (Large Hadron Collider the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1998 to 2008). After accelerating particles up to near the speed of light they are made to collide in an explosion revealing different elemental particles of the atom. A major group of particles in atomic nuclei are called quarks. There are six types of quarks, known as flavours: up, down, strange, charm, bottom, and top. I have used the idea of these collisions to express what the result might feel like. Colours are chosen and manipulated to give a harmonious and pleasing image and represent the quark. The series includes other elemental particles such as Tauon and Glueon. The painting is intended to be exciting close up as well as at a distance with new movements and colour combinations to be seen at every viewing. The title of the painting is the name of a quark or particle as felt appropriate. Please forgive me for giving all this info but I just love the idea of Science and Art coming together. Ready to hang. No need for a frame.

Noble Figure (Terracotta Burnished & Smoked) Inspiration: The nobility, wisdom and peace suggested by many ancient sculptures transposed into a modern context. A feeling of tranquillity and knowledge. A sense of communication. Textures add interest, smoking and gold leaf accentuate the textures. Technique: Hand built and unique. Life Being Time VII, Dick Martin

The inspiration for this series of conceptual paintings comes both from the philosophy of Heidegger and the life giving and life sustaining benefits of modern medicine. Every drop of paint used for the painting has passed through a syringe - a life keeper/giver - therefore “Life” in the title (in this case insulin). Each application of paint takes approximately the same time as preparing and administrating an injection. “Being and Time” is the title of a major work by Heidegger arguing that in “being” and “becoming” all we really have / own is “Time” – i.e. the time we take up in living. Sartre’s work “Being and Nothingness” continued from there. The painting is very colourful and decorative - a celebration of life. It is intended to be exciting close up as well as at a distance with new colours and patterns to be seen at every viewing. The edges show the development of the painting which I see as an added interest. You can choose to hang it vertically or horizontally. Ready to hang. No frame needed.
