ARE PRINTED MAGAZINES A THING OF THE PAST?
It’s so easy for us nowadays to grab our phones or open up our MacBook’s to read something online, find articles or photographs, or update our personal social media accounts, but will we eventually live in a world where print completely dies out and everything becomes internet based?
Despite the fact that the magazine industry is a multi-million-dollar pound business, recently editors, creators and publishers of printed fashion magazines were becoming worried over the expansion of online media. With the quality of digital publications forever on the rise, constantly in demand and fast fashion being right on our doorsteps, editors and publishers of print have to be forward-thinking.
‘In 2014, Vogue’s contributing fashion editor Lynn Yaeger told Racked that print was on its way out. Magazines would become the stuff of novelty like a ‘typewriter or horse and buggy’. (Jeffery Spivey.2016)
Alongside every renowned and successful printed magazine business there will also be an online, exclusive website supplying articles on a regular basis meaning that wherever you are you are able to access your favorite magazine digitally straight away.
Personally, I love having a printed copy of a magazine to carry about with me, reading it on the train, flicking through the glossy pages in bed at night with a wee cup of tea and being able to rip out pages which give myself as a creative person inspiration. Although I do sometimes read articles online as they are super accessible and I am able to read them instantly I like having something that is tangible. Something that I can hold and keep.
Fashion Magazines such as VOGUE have become collectable items to some people who religiously buy a printed copy every month. People don’t only buy fashion magazines to read the monthly articles, a high volume of people simply enjoy gazing though the high quality visual pieces such as advertisements and promotions.
