In 2008 after California voted to ban same sex marriage with proposition 8, four friends decided to get matching tattoos during San Francisco Pride as a constant reminder to fight for social equality. Almost exactly five years later (seriously 5 days early of the 5th anniversary in receiving our tattoos) the supreme court overruled the Defense of Marriage Act, allowing same sex couples to once again marry in California. I am so incredibly happy and (a little bit of) my faith in humanity has been restored. This is a great victory in social equality, but the war on social injustice is far from over.
