From 2003-2005, Ian and Anthony made some flash animations on the Smosh website, one of which involved them and their high school friends (who also worked on this animation with them somewhat) and it was called Die smoshing. It was uploaded to the Smosh website in 2004 and was one of the last flash animations they ever created for the website. It was basically about Ian, Anthony, and their friends at school and some things happen, like how Ian kills a kid in this animation for just no reason, among other things too. So here’s some facts about this flash animation I wanted to share :)
Ian and Anthony are in the credits (that are actually a bit long due to all of their friends working on it with them, so I couldn’t include it all here) and I’ve noticed how they actually both did pretty similar work on this video with Anthony being the main animator while they both did the backgrounds and some drawings, which just goes to show that they’ve been working together on the internet longer than a lot of people think.
I was looking through the reviews of this video on archives of the Smosh website and one thing that was really adorable was how Anthony was praising Ian in his comments by saying how he had a lot of good ideas and how the next animation will be better because Ian was the one writing the script, which is just really sweet to me :’) (just click on the images below to see them better)
One interesting thing I noticed when I was watching it is that there was this one scene in it of Ian saying “don’t take my gun” in his sleep, which is likely based on how he actually once said that in his sleep in real life when Anthony and his friends were going to mess with him. Here’s what I mean:
Another thing about Die smoshing is that it was originally going to be some sort of series because it had ep.1 in the title and this screenshot below proves that there was supposed to be an episode two that might’ve been in development, but it was never finished or released in any way, so we’ll never know what it was going to look like. There’s also some “useless stats” about the production of the flash at the end of the credits too, which I decided to mention here because it says that it took them 6 months in total for them to make this, so maybe it was just too difficult and time consuming to keep making episodes, so that could be why they never made episode two.
Overall, this flash animation that Ian and Anthony (along with their friends at the time) made is a pretty interesting part of a time in smosh’s history that’s almost never mentioned, and I just love finding stuff like this and posting about it, it just really fascinates me how they’ve been doing stuff together for this long by creating things for the Smosh website.
