Little Green Bag - George Baker (especially fao: LateToTheWrapParty) I'm sorry I didn't post anything yesterday. I was busy committing a crime with seven friends, hence SOTD. Heist at Theatre Delicatessen is an inventive, silly, very fun mix of gameplay and immersive theatre, during which you and up to seven other people must succeed in committing one helluva risky crime in order to settle a bloody gangland score. I don't want to spoil anything for anybody as it's running until 29th March, and I think the less you hear about it before going the better. But there are a few things that I wish I had known before starting, so here's some tips if you're one of the lucky ones to be joining a Heist crew this month. * Practical tips - there are free lockers to ditch your bags and coats. Do it. * For chrissakes, go to the loo before you start. Once you're in you have an hour to complete your mission and you really won't be able to pee. Remember *said in Irish accent* "dis is furking serious business". * Depending on your time slot during the evening you may need to wait around a bit beforehand. You're led into the bar and can get a drink - do so as you'll probably have time to drink it, and it's totally do-able tipsy...but probably not smashed, so pace yourself. * This is going to sound ridiculous, but I was genuinely worried about being the person in my team who would blow the whole thing for everybody. DO. NOT. WORRY. ABOUT. IT. I was so inhibited and weirdly nervy for the first half hour that I probably didn't get quite as much out of the experience as I could have. Put your toughest gameface on, make like Bob Hoskins in The Long Good Friday, and go for it. And remember, if you do screw up, nothing bad is going to happen to you (it's not a real crime), but something crazy and fun *might* happen to you. And if you get caught, you're not automatically going to mess up the rest of your crew's night. Take it seriously enough to make it past the first few tasks though... * I was really anxious that I'd find Heist prohibitively hard. I have no spatial awareness, am bad at lying, can be quite clumsy, don't like the dark, and I scare easily. I did fine. Anyone can do this. It is NOT The Crystal Maze. You will not be taxed...but you might have to be a bit creative. * Don't be afraid to speak to the performers. I spent a large part of the evening completely mute - Punchdrunk training was not helpful here. You can speak in this show, and in some instances, you may have to talk your way out of trouble. * Pay attention and remember what you're told. * Team work is key. Communicate with your crew. Share information. It's more rewarding that way. * You're given things to help you. Be smart about how you use them. We weren't. * Put your gamer head on... It will help you find what you're looking for... and maybe other things besides... I especially loved the narrative elements of the show; while simple they work brilliantly within the context of the conceit, and I *loved* the performer who played Doyle - a brilliantly pitched mix of threatening and weirdly charming. There are a number of different paths the show can take depending on the choices you and your team-mates make - ideally, you're aiming to succeed, but if the heist goes wrong, I have a feeling you'll still have just as good a time. And anyway - it's a show. They KNOW where you are - if they want to thwart your best-laid plans, they will. Oh...and the pseudonyms...genius!
