Heyo~ What are your favorite AU's in TCF? And what AU's do you find severely lacking in fics?
AUs in fanfiction is a hit-or-miss for me because well, in my opinion I’m in that fandom because I already love the setting of the world and wish to explore more of it. I admire writers who write AU for a beloved fandom as it’s an incredibly daunting task - I mean the idea of world building on top of the existing OG fic world is just mindblowing- but put into the hands of an experienced writer where an AU is managed well, the experience of reading the resulting AU fic is like consuming pure magic.
So if you ask me what my favorite AUs are in fandoms. I’d simply tell you, you’re looking at it darling, it’s the fandom itself.
But alright, I’ll be a little less annoying and actually answer the question. If there’s one AU trope that always catches my eyes whenever I browse through fanfics and have 60% higher chance of tempting me to click into it and give it a try, it would be Soulmates AU.
I’m really a sucker for fated partners trope. But. What really kills me?
Soulmates AU + twist
I think everyone by now knows that I put platonic relationships and romantic relationships on the same level. Romantic Soulmates AU gives me the warm fuzzies and makes me happy. But holy shit. Give me that fated brothers-from-another-mother jam. Give me that fated FRIENDS, where they fall in love with their S/Os and still have a 200% ride-or-die HEALTHY friendship with each other (keep that jealousy bs away from these peeps!) Yes. Hand me that platter of Soulmates but I don’t have to fall in love with you and we can still rule the damn world together cuz we synergise AU. Yes, I can still have a wonderful lovelife and still have a best soulmate friend.
Also, soulmates names on wrists is a bit overused nowadays. Put a twist on it and *muah* delicious food.
Another AU setting I find myself interested in would sometimes be completely mythical settings - as in, characters being mythical creatures. This AU theme though is more hit-or-miss because it sometimes hinges a lot on the world building and if it isn’t done well it flops hard...
ahem.. anyways.. what are everyone’s favorite AUs in fandoms? I realise a common AU often found in fandoms is Highschool AU. Is that a popular favorite? Let me know!
can I just say your answer to the previous anon is literally exactly how I feel!!!! you also have to take into account Ryan and Danny don't play the same role. aaron is very much a wear your heart on your sleeve person while Robert is the opposite. the character arrived back cruel and nasty because that's what life turned him into. while hes far from that now it hasn't gone. so with Robert he only allows his emotions to show for brief moments, something ryan conveys exceptionally!!
