Circa Waves is an indie rock band formed in 2013 in Liverpool, England. I was previously unfamiliar with their music, but their 2015 debut album Young Chasers received good reviews, which made me optimistic for their new second album, Different Creatures. Upon listening to the first track, Wake Up, even though I liked it, I wrongfully neglected the album for several days before listening to the whole thing. The album as a whole is very typical for mainstream indie rock, but is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. As I previously stated, the album starts with the song Wake Up, which is without a doubt one of my favorites on the album. It's not the most original song in the world but that doesn't stop it from being a really fun song that keeps me invested all the way through. This definitely raised my expectations of the album. Unfortunately for me, the next song, Fire That Burns, is tragically generic and boring. It's very obvious single material. That's not to say it's bad though. The chorus, while repetitive is enjoyable enough. The song as a whole just suffers from what a lot of second songs that don't match the greatness of the first song suffer from. Keeping this in mind, I continued with slightly lower hopes but remained optimistic. Next up is Goodbye, which I can barely remember if I'm not listening to it. Maybe it just isn't my thing, but it feels really generic and forgettable. Following that is Out On My Own, which is much better than the last two songs. It's almost theatrical in a way, and that definitely adds to the song. It absolutely makes up for the glorified white noise that is Goodbye. Finally, we get to the title track, Different Creatures. I have one question regarding this song: why is the album named after it? It's by no means a bad song and it's definitely better than some of what this album has to offer, but this just isn't title track material. It's not super interesting or anything. Why not name the album after a better song, one that isn't on the line between good and mediocre? It does have some nice guitar though, so that's cool. After this, the album definitely starts to pick up. The next song, Crying Shame, is absolutely fantastic. It's a pretty simple love song I guess but the vocals and guitar make it transcend that and to become one of the best songs on the album. After all the electric guitar led tracks I was surprised to hear an acoustic guitar on the next track, Love's Run Out. It's very stripped back and consists entirely vocals and guitar. I could honestly listen to a whole album of just Kieran Shudall playing acoustic songs. The lack of other instruments make this so work so much better than it would with the rest of the band. After that is another great song, Stuck. It's honestly not that different from the rest of the album, but I like it a lot. Something about it just makes it great, but I'm yet to define it. The next song, A Night On The Broken Tiles, is more original sounding than a lot of the other songs, but it unfortunately falls under that same category of Fire That Burns and Different Creatures: good I guess. It's a decent song, but it definitely is not the most interesting one the album has to offer. After that is Without You, which is just as forgettable as Goodbye. I actually forgot this song was on the album until I listened to it again so that's all I really have to say about it. Finally, we reach the last song. Old Friends. This song is refreshingly chill and a very good closer. Its theme is in the same vein as LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends and it's a very welcome, if a bit late, break from the harder-hitting rest of the album. So in conclusion, Different Creatures, despite its faults, is overall a pretty solid album. It's a bit generic but a lot of the song are interesting enough to subvert that. I'm definitely looking forward to the future of Circa Waves and everything they release from here on, even if they still have a bit of work to do.
