I want to be blunt about something. If you dismiss someone or shame someone using ableist language particular to congenital or developmental disabilities (epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, ALS, Muscular Dystrophy, Cabral (and other forms of) Palsy, Autism — Including Aspergers, Intersex, etc.) you are guilty of committing a form of violence. Especially if that person is #BornThisWay and endures the systematic harassment or violence associated with that type of different ability from childhood. This is no different then being ignorant about the systematic sexism against women or systematically racist against black POCs and represents just as severe a pillar of systematic oppression. If you do not see this as a reality and can not comprehend why i find the R* word or it’s lesser used Cor* word equivalent so offensive you may want to inform yourself. I am tired of being silent on this issue. Under this pillar millions of children are harassed on a daily basis. Everything from verbal harassment, to physical assault, to sexual assault, to full on physical torture and torment. We cannot allow this to continue. October was Down Syndrome and Autism awareness month, November is Epilepsy awareness month... thus representing 3 of the more than 20 categories included in the Developmental, Intellectual, Muscular, and other Congenital different abilities normally placed in a group referred to via the R* word. You have absolutely no rights to the language if you aren’t one of the people affected by it. The fact that the world hasn’t changed much since the 40, 30, 20, years since I’ve been harassed based on that word. The fact that a neurologist used it to dismiss that i was experiencing auras no more than 10 years ago as me being a little r*d. These facts summed up makes the use of Yao’s language by non-affected people even more offensive and demeaning. Let’s end the oppression, the hate, the language, and the violence.
