Fight me
“Girlfriend?” Just the word alone made her heart speed up and a sick feeling fill her stomach. “You’re kidding right?” The serious look on his face answered her question for her, Brody was anything but kidding. “In what world do you think that I can handle a boyfriend?” The words fell from her lips, burning her tongue as they escaped, knowing that under any other circumstance Poppy would give anything to be his girlfriend, but with everything she was dealing with there was no way she would be able to deal with having a boyfriend in her life.”You know all the shit that I’m going through, I can’t even go home Brody…” it was only just occurring to her now that after this she might not even have Brody’s to go to anymore.
"It wouldn’t even be fair to you, I would be a terrible girlfriend, I wouldn’t have time for you and-" She didn’t want to say what she was thinking, saying her thoughts out loud would be like breathing life into her biggest fear. If they became anything more than friends he could turn out to be just like her dad, To her bruises on your face were just marks from the ones who loved you most. "I can’t do it Brody, you know that. Why would you even ask? Do you even know how selfish you sound right now?" Poppy cursed herself for the words she allowed herself to say to him, Brody was one of the least selfish people she had ever met and she knew every word she spoke was cutting him like a knife, and she continued to cut deeper.
"I don’t know what you thought all this was, but I never felt more for you than simple friendship. Friendship Brody, that’s it. You were someone I could trust, someone I could go to and you just threw that all away by asking me to be your girlfriend, you know that right?" Each word that flew from her mouth formed a new lie and she began to wonder when lying became so second nature to her. She lied to everyone on a daily basis to protect the ones she loved, but this time around was different, this time she was lying to protect herself from the one she loved.
"I think it’s just best if I stay somewhere else tonight." Poppy’s voice fell from it’s much louder tone it had taken before. "And don’t-" she started to speak before Brody could even get a word in, "don’t call me or text me or anything for a while okay?" She let out a light sigh knowing not being able to speak to him would be something she’d have to adjust to. "I just need my space, please."
