I’ll be posting a special thing I made for the occasion (this weekend probably, since, completely on brand for me, it’s not done yet), but it was around this time of day exactly 10 years ago that I made my first post on this blog. It was a reblog of some Jou Kido gifs of course! I created this blog originally because I wanted to roleplay with my best friends, who had just done a big rewatch of Adventure and 02 with me (one of them watching it for the first time, which was awesome). Tri part 1 had been announced and was quickly approaching, and I wanted to be THE source of Jou Kido content on tumblr at the time. I don’t think I succeeded in that back then, but I feel like at this point 10 years later I probably have. Among other things 🤣

I always complain about how I made this blog its own account instead of a side blog of my personal (I did that because it was easier to roleplay if only your rp friends and specific fandom were on your dash)… but to be honest, I’m glad I did it that way. I get to log into this account and be bombarded with exclusively Digimon posts, which I love.

This blog is how I made some of the best friends I’ve ever had. It’s how I was able to enjoy my favorite show with other people who love it. It’s how I developed my deep affection for Jou Kido, even after the roleplaying stopped. It’s how I shared the Digimon tri experience. Eventually I started drawing fanart and writing fanfiction. I joined Camp Digimonth. I made endless gifsets and perfected my BGM edits and got excited about crumbs of canon content and posted some ridiculous shit.

I love you all. I love this blog. I love Digimon. I hope you’re all ready for 10 more years of this

So I have a bit of an obsession with Digimon US English dub merch. These are the Digimon Upper Deck oversized promo cards that they used for store displays in the US (regular cards for scale)

I bought the set for $10 at a convention and realized when I got home that it was missing the TK and Tokomon card. I spent a few years looking for it on eBay and this year I finally found someone selling the entire set for a good price. So I bought it... and it got lost in the mail, most likely permanently lost. So I ended up buying the TK one from someone else who was selling them each individually (I was able to talk the price down thankfully). So yeah. I now have the full set! I'm really sad that the set I ordered first got lost in the mail, because these are extremely rare and I doubt there are very many sets floating around. If I ever see the full set on eBay again, I'll assume that person is my neighbor who stole it lol.

Anyway apparently I don't have a regular version of that rookie card. Or a normal Joe 😂

A couple weeks ago, my friend/coworker who likes anime and her husband were driving us to a con for a day trip. They know I like Digimon and that I am 100% guaranteed to Talk About It if I have even the slightest reason to (they have never seen Digimon and know very little about it). It’s kind of a running gag with us at this point. I got in the car with them and “All Star” was playing. I was immediately like “people always say this is a Shrek song, but it was in the Digimon movie too.” And they humor me. And then the next song that played was “All My Best Friends Are Metalheads”. And I was like “DID YOU GUYS MAKE A DIGIMON PLAYLIST BECAUSE I’M IN THE CAR. And my friend’s husband is like “we didn’t think you’d figure it out so quickly” 🤣

Digi-memories, summer 2000 (feat. me crying more than once)

On Saturday, June 24, 2000, I was on vacation in the mountains with my family. I was 11 at the time. We were staying in a cabin with electricity and running water, but obviously no computers, phones, internet or cable. We had a tiny, black and white TV with rabbit ears that we brought with us, and it got like 3 local channels that would cut in and out. One of them was Fox! I knew the final two episodes of Digimon: Digimon Monsters were airing that day (Fox Kids waited a whole month to air them for some reason). And amazingly my sister and I were able to actually watch them! In black and white of course. And the reception did cut out for most of Apocalymon's famous pizza crust speech. But I got to see the finale with the full version of "Hey Digimon" and the trolley car and Mimi's hat, etc.

And I cried. A lot. I was (and still am) incredibly sensitive and prone to crying at the drop of a hat. We had only just started the week-long vacation when the episodes aired and (according to my parents), I was "annoying" all week because of how upset I was. I thought it was over forever. That I'd never get to see Digimon again. That my faves' story was over and they would never get to see their Digimon again. I remember grabbing my spiral notebook (which was at the time filled with Team Rocket fanfiction), and started writing letters to the Digidestined. I wish I still had them, tbh, because I'd love to know what I came up with for Joe, who I was not a fan of at the time. Probably most of the emotion went to Matt, who was my favorite character back then, and Izzy, who was my sister's.

Anyway, there was this stretch of time between June 24, 2000 and August 19, 2000, when the season 1 dub had finished airing and the 02 dub started airing. Apparently 02 began airing in Japan in April, 2000, so by the time the season 1 dub ended on Fox Kids, there were already a number of 02 episodes out in Japan (apparently 13 episodes to be exact).

That summer, I read a rumor on an English language Digimon message board claiming that the new season (02) was going to "completely cut out the characters of Matt, Sora, Mimi and Joe". Since I was 11 years old at the time, I took this at face value (though if you remove the word 'completely', the rumor is largely true).

I remember going into the basement of my house and crying my eyes out (again) for Matt, Sora, Mimi and Joe. I made up a rambling song that essentially eulogized them, and I sang it for hours in the basement with the lights off for some reason. I remember telling my parents about it and they had no idea what to do to console me. My sister was 6 years old, so who knows if that "news" affected her in any way. It's funny because at the time, I didn't even particularly like Sora, Mimi, or Joe. But I was still devastated by their "loss".

There's nothing else to the story, really. I think I was probably surprised when most of the older Digidestined did show up in the first handful of episodes of 02. I don't think 02 made me cry (or at least not as much). But after it was over, I wrote like 20 love letters to Davis and wrote some cringy self-insert fic. All of those I definitely do still have.

WOAH. It happened! This blog is over 8 years old, so I probably could have posted more, but still, it's good to know there's this much Digimon content floating around!

I am reminded that I had a dream last night where there was another adventure verse movie after Kizuna and the beginning, and it involved Taichi and Yamato in a restaurant and Taichi was really sad but Yamato walked over and kissed him on the lips??? In the restaurant?? I have barely ever in my life given that ship more than a passing glance and yet this is the only time I have EVER had a Digimon shipping dream 🤣

Also then Joe and Sora were flying through the air with jet packs and were fighting an evil Disney-themed monster that sang “you’re welcome” from Moana. So ummmmm yeah. I’m sure you’re all interested in this 🤣🤣🤣
