In Danish there is this phrase, "at gøre sig umage"- which translates to "to make oneself without equal" if you take the literal meaning. However to me, the practical needing of this phrase has come to be the central concept in how I'm coping with reality these days.

The phrase, in practice, is more used similarly to "apply yourself", "taking it seriously" or "giving it an honest try". Which I have found so much joy in.

I'm spare you the sermon on how content algorithms are actual poison for you mind and society, you already know that. But doing something because you want to, deciding to put effort into it and doing it intentionally, if so empowering.

For me, something like actually watching a YouTube video that I set aside for when I had spare time, looking at the screen and paying attention, amplifies what I get out of it compared to playing it in another tab while doing something else. This seems obvious, but I keep making this mistake, so guess it isn't too me.

The same goes for chores. If I can make myself decide that "now is dishes time", and then do dishes and focus on it, I can actually find myself enjoying the task, rather than dragging myself through it by force.

I often find myself romanticizing monks in eastern religions. Maintaining a space and focusing on just being present sounds wonderful. I find myself fantasizing about sweeping the courtyard and finding fulfillment and pride in that, but then I look at my apartment floor, covered in dust and dirt, and I can't muster the willpower to sweep that. I wonder what the difference is there.

I've been thinking a lot about the myth of Sisyphus lately as well. I think he arrived at the same conclusion of doing something intentionally, taking it seriously and being happy while doing it.

The daoists also talk about something similar with being present. Not dwelling in the past or thinking of the future, since the moment you are in right now, is the only thing you can control.

For those that do witchcraft, intention is also a really big part of it, or the whole thing, depending on who you ask. I think being mindful of what you are doing and trying to avoid autopilot or letting some algorithm control you is similarly harnessing the power of intention.

Idk, I feel like I've connected some dots in my head and I'm hoping to put it into practice going forward.
