#In Love With My Mutuals
Digital Hugs - alexiuss
One of the things that worries me a lot is in the Screenrant interview, the showrunners openly mention that Shiro was just meant to be a conduit for Keith to rise to leadership. To me this implies no good end for Shiro, that his entire purpose and all that bonding he did was all for naught if his role is just to be a stepping stool for another character's arc. That being said, I fear him being killed off, demoted, sidelined or the Black Lion being taken from him. What are your thoughts on that?
First - *digital hug* Everyone needs one of those every once and a while.
Second - Not sure if you saw this, but I did a post on that interview to explain a bit about it and how it actually proves that who we have is #OneTrueBlackPaladin Shiro.
What I took from that interview was - the Shiro the EPs speak about - the one that was supposed to be a conduit for Keith to become the pilot of Black - is not the Shiro we have today. That Shiro didn’t have PTSD, wasn’t selected by Black, wasn’t fighting Zarkon to bond with Black. All those plot points were added AFTER the EPs were told by DW execs to expand Shiro’s role, so the person who was supposed to help Keith become the Black Paladin is no longer part of the story. Keith is the Red Paladin, Lance is the Blue Paladin, and Shiro is the Black Paladin - and canon proves that.
Red comes for Keith no less than four times.
Shiro is the one who bonds with Black - first in S1E2, again in S2E7, and yet again in S2E13. No other paladin has bonded with their lion like Shiro has (and no other paladin has made their bayard glow like Shiro).
Marketing - I know I speak out against DW’s marketing because it misguides the viewer many times (e.g. ECCC poster - Zarkon is huge and yet is gone by S5E2), but it should be noted that ALL marketing collateral save the NYCC poster from last year has always shown Shiro in the Black Paladin role. Even the new Simon and Schuster books show Shiro in the Black Paladin role, and Keith and Lance share the Red Lion.
Despite what is said in interviews - Shiro has driven the plot of every season.
S1 - Shiro is prophesied to return and guides the team to form Voltron.
S2 - Shiro remembers his escape and sets the team on the course to end Zarkon with the BoM.
S3 - Shiro is gone; how does the team adapt?
S4 - Shiro has now returned; how does the team reform?
S5 - Shiro wants Lotor on the throne/is missing. How does the team adjust/find real!Shiro?
Is there a chance that Shiro could be killed off, demoted, sidelined or the Black Lion being taken from him? Yes. That could always be the case, but the canon has shown nothing less than Shiro is the Black Paladin.

I also highly recommend this meta by @sol1056. It’s a realistic reaction to your very ask, but though there are awesome points all around in it, here’s the kicker:
That is a serious amount of depth to put on a character you plan to ditch at the first opportunity. Add in deliberate emotional weight by the VAs’ delivery – “good to have you back,” “patience yields focus,” “as many times as it takes” – and you’ve created an irreplaceable character. Even his absence will reverberate through the story; unlike the blank slates, Shiro has a there, there.
Despite what the EPs say in interviews, despite their arguments that they never wanted Shiro, despite everything they say off-camera and out-of-the-series, they cannot deny this one fact that is canon:
Shiro is irreplaceable, in the story and to the viewers who love him. And the DW execs know that, even if the EPs don’t.
