Digital Identities

First, we need to understand how our digital identities are composed within online platforms. Ertzscheid (2016) believes that the construction of digital personas has entered us into a third stage of the Information Age: “the World Life Web” (‘Introduction’). He goes on to explain that our digital identities are formed by collating the digital traces left by individuals, which can be divided into three, overlapping categories:

Profile Traces: how we describe ourselves, identifying who we are.

Browsing Traces: the sites we visit and/or leave comments on, demonstrating our behaviour.

Declarative Traces: published material that reflects our opinions or beliefs (Ertzscheid 2016, ‘Identity logics’).

On a more technical level, our digital identities on social media are also composed by our given and family names, our usernames, any professional and social information, photos and avatars, tags, comments, and any geo-locational data (Ertzscheid 2016, ‘Identity logics’).

It’s worth noting that, much like in real life, our ‘identity’ is a fluid concept that is susceptible to changes based on numerous contextual features. Seargeant & Tagg (2014) believe that identity is “a set of resources which people draw upon in presenting and expressing themselves” to others. They also note that contextual, situational features often determine a person’s decision to “present themselves in different ways” (p. 5). This socio-linguistic understanding of identity can be recognised in both real-world situations and the online contexts explored in this blog.

Seargeant & Tagg (2014) define “social media” as “Internet-based sites and platforms which facilitate the building and maintaining of networks or communities through the sharing of messages and other media” (p. 3). While this definition is admittedly broad, it does provide the appropriate framework to analyse how authenticity and anonymity can come into conflict on any platform with that requires public interactions between users.
