Prince Link is still deaf and mute, and this disability has become a part of the gossip concerning his inability to connect with the Goddesses. Since he first lost his hearing and voice at a young age, courtiers began speculating about his health. Some claimed that his disability would make him “more pure” and “innocent” to recieve gifts from the Golden Goddesses, and at first many people actually think that his deafness will become a good thing.
But as Link grow up and it becomes clear that the Goddesses are not speaking to him, many begin to sneer and whisper that the king should have re-married long ago. That his firstborn is obviously not the holy vessel they need. People talk about Link like he is stupid. Lazy. Fragile. Incapable. Because he does not pray out loud, he must not be showing the devotion that he needs. He obviously isn’t trying.
And besides, even if the goddesses did speak to him, how could he hear them? He’s deaf. He’s incapable. He’s selfish and rude and never smiles enough.
Link is, in fact, none of these things. He prays every day, begging and pleading for some kind of sign. He studies religion and practices in Hyrule constantly in case there is something he is missing about his role. He has, in fact, hurt his throat and gotten infections several times in the past by trying to use his voice too much in prayers and straining his scarred vocal cords.
And yes, in this AU, he also will pray in the holy springs for longer than is healthy or safe. He works himself to collapse far too often.
