Dilgar Wars - Final Battle by Ulimann
A Death for a Life
The plot healing device that exchanges the life energy of one person in order to heal another is actually an early prototype of the Dilgar scientist-turned-genocidal-murderer Jha'dur aka Deathwalker's attempt at creating immortality. This explains why there is only one, why its so mysterious and yet not an ancient artifact, and most importantly why it exchanges life energy from one person to another. Perhaps the reason it was abandoned was because 1) it did not grant immortality, only cured illness and injury or 2) it could be used by multiple people which is conveniently forgotten in order to make it less harmful to the user, which was not Deathwalker's intent.
