Chapter 4 - A New Neighbourhood
We decided to take a break from our search for the Car Wizard and instead explore the new neighbourhood we found ourselves in. It was going to be our home base for a while and getting to know it better might come in handy.
"Nikhil, let's start by checking out the local market," I suggested. "We might find some interesting places and meet people who know more about the Car Wizard."
"Good idea," Nikhil agreed. "Plus, we could use some fresh supplies."
As we walked through the market, we were greeted by the sights and sounds of the morning bustle. Vendors were setting up their stalls, selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The aroma of freshly baked bread and brewed coffee filled the air.
We stopped at a small bakery, drawn in by the delicious smell. The baker, an elderly woman with a warm smile, welcomed us.
"Good morning! Fresh faces in town, I see," she said cheerfully. "What brings you here?"
"We're on a bit of a mission," I replied. "But we're also trying to get to know the neighbourhood better."
"Well, you've come to the right place," she said, handing us a couple of freshly baked croissants. "The market is the heart of this community. You'll find all sorts of interesting people and stories here."
We thanked her and continued our exploration, enjoying the warm, flaky pastries as we wandered through the market. We struck up conversations with various vendors, learning about the history and quirks of the neighbourhood.
One of the vendors, a middle-aged man selling antique car parts, caught our attention. His stall was filled with fascinating items, some of which looked like they belonged in a museum.
"Excuse me, sir," Nikhil said. "Do you know anything about the Car Wizard?"
The man chuckled. "Ah, the Car Wizard. Everyone around here has heard of him, but very few have seen him. He's quite the enigma."
"Do you know where we might find him?" I asked.
"Well, rumour has it that he frequents the local garage on the edge of town," the man replied. "But be warned, he's a very private person. You'll need to earn his trust."
We thanked the vendor and made our way to the garage, feeling a renewed sense of hope. The neighbourhood had already proven to be a treasure trove of information and friendly faces. We were confident that with a little patience and perseverance, we'd find the Car Wizard and convince him to collaborate with us.
We mad out way to the garage on the edge of town, the morning sun now fully illuminating the charming streets. The garage was a modest, unassuming building with an old-fashioned sign that read “Magic Motors.” We exchanged hopeful glances as we approached the entrance.
As we stepped inside, we were greeted by the smell of motor oil and the sound of clinking tools. A few mechanics were busy working on various vehicles, but one person caught our eye. He was hunched over an engine, meticulously tuning something.
“Excuse me,” I called out. “We’re looking for the Car Wizard.”
The man looked up, his face smeared with grease, but his eyes sharp and assessing. “Who’s asking?”
“We’ve been hearing a lot of about the Car Wizard and his incredible designs,” Nikhil said. “We’re hoping to discuss a potential collaboration.”
The man wiped his hands and stood up straight, revealing his impressive stature. “You’re not the first ones to come looking for him. What makes you think you can succeed where others have failed?”
“We’re dedicated and passionate about our work,” I replied earnestly. “We believe that with the Car Wizard’s designs, we can create something truly revolutionary.”
The man regarded us thoughtfully for a moment before nodding. “Alright, follow me.”
He led us through the garage to a small office in the back. The walls were covered with blueprints and sketches, all meticulously organized. He motioned us to sit down.
“I am not the Car Wizard,” he began, “but I work closely with him. My name is Ravi. I handle some of the more public aspects of his work.”
“Nice to meet you, Ravi,” I said. “So, where can we find the Car Wizard?”
Ravi leaned back in his chair. “The Car Wizard is very selective about who he meets. He prefers to remain in the shadows, letting his work speak for itself. But I can tell you this: he values innovation and determination. If you want to earn his trust, you will need to prove your worth.”
Nikhil nodded. “We’re ready to do whatever it takes.”
Ravi smiled slightly. “Good. There’s a project we’re working on that could use some fresh ideas. It’s a test of creativity and problem-solving. If you can come up with a viable solution, I’ll arrange for you to meet the Car Wizard.”
He handed us a set of blueprints. “Study these. Come back tomorrow with your ideas, and we’ll see if you have what it takes.”
As we left the garage, I felt a mixture of excitement and apprehension. We had a real opportunity to prove ourselves, but the challenge ahead was daunting.
“Let’s get to work,” I said to Nikhil. “We need to make the most of this chance.”
Back at our temporary home, we spread out the blueprints on the table and began brainstorming. The design was complex, with several potential issues that needed addressing. We spent the rest of the day and well into the night working on our ideas, determined to come up with a solution that would impress Ravi and the Car Wizard.
After what felt like a lifetime, we finally managed to get a solution that would impress and would be cost-effective, which was a feat.
So, to celebrate Nikhil decided to call some friends and catch up. I could hear his laughter echoing in the house. It was good to hear him relax and unwind after the intense brainstorming session.
I, on the other hand, decided to get the remainder of stuff organised in our new home.
As I meticulously organized our home, a sense of peace washed over me. Each item found its place, transforming the space into something cozy and personal. It was a stark contrast to the chaos of the last few days. Everything was going so fast that I had no time to dwell inside my emotions.
Once I was done, I decided to take a stroll on the nearby Reis Magos Fort and in that moment, I saw the sunset.
Beautiful colours merging into one another to create stunning live art. I didn’t even realise that I started crying till I felt a drop of own tears falling on my hand.
Kaali…the pain that I caused you. I hope you are okay, wherever you are.
