The Scarlet Letter: Final Thoughts
Before reading the Scarlet Letter, I honestly thought that it was a book about a woman who slept around and who had to wear a scarlet A on her chest because of that. Once actually reading the book for the first time, I fully take back my previous thoughts about the book. Hester Prynne did not sleep around. She thought that her husband, who she had no love for in the first place, was dead, therefore believing it was okay for her to sleep with another man, who she actually felt a connection with. When she found out her husband was still alive, she felt a bit of guilt, but overall she didn’t regret her actions. If Hester's daughter, Pearl, had not been birthed out of this wedlock, the whole story probably would not have happened, and everybody could go on with their lives. But sadly, this was not the case. Don’t get me wrong, Pearl is a wonderful, inquisitive child, but she is most definitely the source of all of this pain and suffering. Dimmesdale, on the other hand, could have done so much more to help Hester, although he did do all in his power, without being outed as the father. Chillingworth overall as a character is honestly THE MOST disgusting creature ever, and he is most certainly comparable to the Devil. His only goal in life was to get revenge on poor Hester, Pearl, and whoever the baby daddy was (Dimmesdale). After reading The Scarlet Letter, I definitely took away some morals and lessons from the book. First off, if you let something or somebody consume you, take up all of your time, be your focus in life, that thing/person will be the death of you. Letting one thing control you actions and keep you from happiness, is not a good way to live, and it certainly won’t get you any further in life. Another thing the book taught me was forgiveness. Yes, Hester did commit adultery, and yes, Hester did have a child out of wedlock, but honestly, what is dwindling on that issue all of you life going to do for you? Sometimes you need to forgive people, allow them to show you that they have changed, give them a second chance, because sometimes, that’s all that a person needs, a second chance. Hester definitely showed all of us that you can turn something bad into a productive, even good thing.
The Scarlet Letter~ Ending
I’m not sure whether or not I liked the ending of The Scarlet Letter. I think the ending was realistic in the fact that Pearl and Hester disappear and Hester lives by herself. She doesn’t get her happy ending but, I don’t think it is realistic in the fact that they don’t leave the town till after Chillingworth dies. It doesn’t make any sense. Why don’t they leave after Dimmesdale dies? He was Hester’s lover and Pearl’s father so why didn’t they just leave then? Did she want to deal with the public’s shaming again? I think they should have left after Dimmesdale died. The way Dimmesdale died was also not realistic but was realistic in the sense that after he had confessed his sin and was loved by his daughter, he could die in peace. I like how Hester comes back to continue doing work for the public after her daughter is living a wealthy and happy life but, I wish she got a better ending. Hester got the short end of the stick for the majority of her adult life and I think after as much pain as she went through, she deserved some happiness. I think had Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl left earlier, she would have been happy but Pearl would have not so the story always ends unhappy for one person. At least Pearl can live a happy life and that Dimmesdale died in peace. Chillingworth, deservingly died alone with his hateful self and I think he realized that Pearl was not to blame, giving her all of his land. If I could have, I would have given everyone but Chillingsworth a happy ending because, I believe in happy endings.

:-/ I’m sorry, Karen. That school must be tough to get into. Any other schools you can apply to over there?
Yeah, I just sent a couple more applications and I contacted the admissions office to ask if I could email them a copy of my transcript when I receive it (I didn't do that with Birkbeck because I figured since I didn't graduate...but I want to show that I do have experience with University and my grades were pretty good) since I didn't see an option for that on the website I had to use to apply. I'm not going down without a fucking fight.
Obituary
Arthur Dimmesdale passed away last Sabbath, election day. His death is quite unusual, as he died after delivering what many say to be the most powerful sermon of his career. Following his sermon he ascended the scaffold and proclaimed his sins. He announced that it was he that fathered a child with Mistress Hester Prynne all those years ago. He expressed deep remorse and regret that he left Hester to suffer alone, and that little Pearl never had a father. Arthur Dimmesdale died young, in his late twenties. Minister Dimmesdale was an inspiring minister and was loved by the people of Boston. He is survived by his illegitimate daughter Pearl. He will buried in King’s Chapel graveyard.
