There’s only one word that Din’s mind can conceive of: run.
It started the moment the bounty hunters jumped out. Din should’ve known better and had his own hunter senses on alert, but he was too enraptured by the smile on your face when you held up a little tunic that would fit Grogu perfectly. You’d dropped the tunic when you peered over Din’s armored shoulder and seen the hunters behind him. They didn’t hesitate any longer.
The fight was the most brutal Din’s faced in a long time. He couldn’t keep his eyes on you the way he always wants to. He knows you can handle yourself, but his protectiveness over you has certain demands. Din tried not to grow nervous when he couldn’t focus on you.
Instead, he felt something much worse when he saw the blade run through your stomach.
Din doesn’t remember much of the immediate aftermath. All he can recall is the red-hot anger that blinded his vision, leading to a pair of bloody gloves that picked you up with all the urgency yet delicacy in the galaxy. Now, all he can do is run—and hope that he hasn’t completely failed you yet.
He glances down at you in his arms. You’re still conscious, but your eyes are half shut and your hands are clinging to your open wound. Din’s heart races faster than ever before as he picks up the pace, relieved to see the silhouette of the Crest appear in the distance.
“We’re almost home, cyar’ika,” Din assures you in a panicked, modulated breath. “Stay with me.”
Din can tell you want to respond, but you can’t, instead burying your face in his shoulder. He pulls you even closer as he darts forward, lowering the hatch with his vambrace and racing inside. He can hear the confused coos of Grogu coming from within his compartment but he can’t bring himself to do anything about it.
“Breathe,” Din instructs in a soft voice. The word is shaky, but he manages to speak it, setting you down upon the floor and reaching for the medpac. “Just breathe.”
He doesn’t know if the instructions are for you or for himself.
Din’s gloved hands tremble as he sets the medpac on the floor and kneels beside you. He lifts your hands from the wound and sucks in a breath at the sight of the wound. Din has no idea how he’ll fix this—fix you.
You seem to understand the same thing. Your choke on a gasp as you look up at Din with eyes losing the light he’s come to adore—no, love. Din can feel his eyes burning as your expression tells him more than your words ever could.
“No… No!” Din’s pleading as his hands grab the sides of your face, pulling your forehead to meet his helmet. “Come on, I can’t lose you!"
You just smile and lift a bloody hand to caress the side of his helmet, no doubt leaving a smear behind as your gaze searches his visor. Din can’t handle the idea of watching the light drain completely from your eyes. He pulls you against his shoulder, resting his helmet upon your head and absorbing the life in your while he can. Din thinks about all the opportunities he had to share his true feelings for you and didn’t. The wave of regret hits him so hard it knocks the breath from his chest, leaving him to close his eyes and hold you while he still can.
That’s when he hears another concerned coo—but this time, it’s right next to him.
Din’s eyes open as he leans away to look at Grogu. He’s sitting beside Din with his petal-like ears drooped down to his sides, pure evidence of him using his powers. Din’s eyes double in size when he realizes your wound has been completely healed.
“Grogu,” Din croaks, swallowing past the lump in his throat as he sets you down and starts to reach for the little one. “You—.”
“Don’t let me go.” The sound of your voice makes Din freeze in place as his visor whips back to you. He sees you looking at him with the same desperation that’s stuck to his chest as you reach for him with weak arms. “Please.”
“I won’t.” Din’s reassurance is firm yet soft as he takes you in his arms again, letting your bury your face in his shoulder. “I promise, I—I’ll never let you go.”
You move closer to him, your bloody hands clinging to the cloth underneath his armor as you take a shaky breath. “You make me feel safe.”
Din smiles as he wishes he could comfort you with much more than just his embrace. “You... make me feel the very same way.” And so much more.
One day, he’ll tell you just that.
