Fanfic Classics Series #8

So... I know I’ve been MIA for months now. Rather than write a rather dull dissertation on the reasons why, I thought I’d pop my head back into the Outlander fandom with my favorite part of the fandom--the fanfic and its writers. Thus I’m resurrecting something I started last year, the Fanfics Classics Series, to point out some slightly older stories that are worth reading again (or for the first time, for those who missed them on the first go-round).

This isn’t just one story, but is a group effort from all the mods of Imagine, who deserve heaps and heaps of thanks for working so incredibly hard to consistently put out high quality, exquisitely written, enthusiastic portrayals of the Outlander world. It comprises 7 individual ficlets bound together. @mybeautifuldecay engages in a little wish fulfillment, @westerhos indulges us with some lovely Claire x Fergus time, @gotham-ruaidh breaks our hearts, @bonnie-wee-swordsman reminds us of the sisterhood between Claire and Jenny, @writtenthroughtime gives us a glimpse of Claire with the grandkids, @dingbatland reminds Laoghaire to whom Jamie belongs, and @lenny9987 gives us a classic moment viewed through Jamie’s eyes. 

From one lazy, out-of-practice fanfic writer to all those writers (and artists and gif-makers and fans) who are putting great stuff out there--

C - Honestly one of my all time favorite OCs was a character I made for a Star Wars RPG - Ruby Altair. She was a fantastic pansexual space pirate captain who had a rollercoaster of a character arc. The campaign was 6 months long so I got to develop her so much. I would still like to import her into an original scifi story someday. My favorite character by someone else? Ooof that’s a tough one. I have a lot. (see this post) Sabriel’s definitely at the top because she’s been my fictional role model for more than half my life now.

H - My first non-school related story writing probably happened around..I want to say fourth or fifth grade? (Fun fact, my first fanfiction was a harry potter fic I wrote with my best friend in fifth grade, mainly about an american wizarding school)

M - At this point in my life I handle constructive criticism very well. But that’s taken a lot of work. Writing and posting fanfiction back on FF.net got me started on learning how to take concrit, and creative writing classes/workshops definitely helped a lot too. It’s hard. Sometimes it still hurts if someone says something I have a lot of feelings about just didn’t work. But ultimately I remind myself that constructive criticism is how you grow as a writer.

O - All these damn stories in my head is what motivates me! I want to tell stories. I want to create beautiful and inspiring stuff for people to read and enjoy. I want to play with characters and ideas I find interesting. Sometimes words just come together in my head and I have to get them down.

I’m actually really warming to this theory, especially since I just remembered that in “Esprit de Corps” Steed puts Cathy’s leather clothes in the washing machine because he doesn’t know that they shouldn’t be laundered.  Maybe Steed was always going “Are weird striped pants good?” and Cathy and Emma always said, “No, they are never good,” but Tara, with her own questionable fashion choices (a large cardigan and no pants are NOT appropriate office wear), tells him they are A-OK.

About the French thing, I was in a French immersion elementary school and middle school, and while they tried and I was fluent, it wasn't until I went to the French school board in highschool that I really began to learn French. I think it's because the teachers mostly have French as a first language, and French class is taught like English class is in English schools (so with more of a focus on literature, and literature that's mostly interesting too).

That sounds amazing! Listened to her a lot as a kid, still love her. She has such an incredible voice

She really does... I was only properly introduced to her music about five years ago, but I fell hard and fast and I never looked back <3 It’s just so otherworldly in the best possible ways.

She’s also hilarious??? Which I didn’t expect, for some reason... I think maybe it’s that her music sounds so serious and/or dramatic. But she’s really funny, and she’s a great storyteller.

(Also she brought up the fact that she was going to be back in Ontario just in time for the US election, and I’m pretty sure someone up in the balcony shouted “VOTE FOR HILLARY”, and she just kind of went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and it was great)
