Incrementan a 89 los muertos en dos terremotos en el noroeste de China

Pekín.- Al menos 89 personas murieron este lunes en dos terremotos en una región montañosa y de difícil acceso de la provincia china de Gansu, en el noroeste del país, indicaron las autoridades.

Las autoridades de la ciudad de Dingxi, que supervisa los distintos distritos afectados, también afirmaron que había alrededor de 600 heridos más y que 14 personas se hallaban desaparecidas, señaló AFP.

CHINA EARTHQUAKE DEATH TOLL RISES (UPDATE)

The death toll from a series of earthquakes that shook a semi-arid area of northwestern China—which caused landslides and destroyed thousands of homes—has risen overnight, jumping to at least 94 with around 887 reported injuries, authorities have said.

The first, and strongest tremor, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, toppled brick walls, power and telephone lines and sent "cascades of dirt and rock" down hillsides of many areas near the city of Dingxi, in Gansu province, hindering rescue efforts by search and rescue volunteers trying to reach remote areas.

Makeshift aid stations were set up in car parks to cope with the steady influx of injured whilst hundreds of members from the paramilitary People's Armed Police sifted through rubble for survivors.

Min County, in the rural southern part of Dingxi municipality, was worst affected with all but three of the deaths occurring there, Dingxi Mayor Tang Xiaoming told state broadcaster CCTV. 

Heavy rains predicted for next week could hamper rescue efforts and trigger secondary disasters such as landslides or building collapses, he added.
