The Days (2023) - 10 ✨
I just finished re-watching "The Days" for the nth time over on netflix. I watched it as a dinner show with Dad this time. It's about the Fukushima event, the miniseries follows the TOEPCO workers as they try to get the impending meltdown under control while still dealing with the after effects of the tsunami and the occasional aftershock from the earthquake that caused it all. We also get a look into the perspective of the politicians who tried to manage things behind the scenes, and all the help that was recieved throughout.
I really love this show, it's interesting and enthralling. It keeps you completely hooked and on the edge of your seat, whilst also remaining respectful to the disaster, the people involved and the truth of the events. They use moments of silence and stillness well.
I was impressed with how everyone did their best to keep calm and carry on whilst chaos went on around them. There were some crashouts, some extremely valid ones, but for the most part they kept calm and when they didn't they apologised and got right back to work. Considering it's, while dramatised, based on the real events and people as much as possible, that's worth some genuine respect. RIP to their Prime Minister though, he had the full crashouts, again they were very valid ones, but his looked a lot more like tantrums. I wonder what was said about him for him to be portrayed like that? 😅
Dad enjoyed it too. I wonder if it's purchaseable? I'll have to look around later.
The Days was directed by Masaki Nishiura and Hideo Nakata. It was written and produced by Jun Masumoto. They worked together to produce a faithful adaptation of the disaster by referring to 3 primary sources written up during the initial investigation and later research by other. They are;
The Yoshida Testimony - a first-hand account of the events shared by the station manager, Masao Yoshida, who was on-duty then
the official Fukushima Nuclear Accident Analysis Report
On the Brink: The Inside Story of Fukushima Daiichi, by Ryūshō Kadota (journalist), a bestselling novel written using extensive interviews with atleast 90 of the attending workers.
The Days has 1 season with 8 episodes, each 50ish minutes long. I watched it with english subtitles and the og japanese dub on Netflix.

I'd never swam in the Atlantic Ocean before, and it was surprisingly warm! I'm more familiar with the water temperature on the Oregon Coast 🥶
