Dino Winter Holidays 2017

It's time for Dinomas, Dinokkah, Dino Winter Solstice, and Dinozaa!

IT’S ALMOST DECEMBER! 

We all know what THAT means! 

THAT’S RIGHT! 

DINOSAUR THEMED WINTER HOLIDAYS! 

This year for personal reasons I will not be running Dinomas. Instead, my lovely partner, Max, will be reblogging all your posts (he’ll be reblogging them HERE, on ADAD, so y’all won’t even notice a change)! So you can find one-word prompts for various dinosaur-themed Christmas ideas (whether you draw, write a Christmas song parody, or write a story) for you to do! This will go on December 1st through the 11th 

Then, from December 12th to the 20th we’ll be having Dinokkah! Dinosaur-themed Chaunkah prompts are in there too for all your drawing, songwriting, and writing :D 

After that we’ll have Dino Winter Solstice on the 21st - draw, write, or compose about dinosaurs in the winter! 

Then we return from December 22nd to the 25th to Dinomas!! More prompts exist for those days as well! 

And then we’ll have Dinozaa where I’ll feature a different African bird each day from December 26th to the 31st! 

And finally on December 31st we’ll all look back on 2017! 

Now, what you’ve all been waiting for...

The Secret Sinosauropteryx only works if we have plenty of people doing it so please message me if you want to take part!!! There is no limitation (it’s a Secret Sinosauropteryx so you don’t have to celebrate Christmas to take part) and you can create whatever you want (so you don’t have to be able to draw)!

Dinoween, Dinovember, & Dino Winter Holidays 2017

Prompt Sign-Up!

As requested, here’s the prompt sign up sheet! Also, I’ve changed my icon for the festive time of year

I decided to do all the late-month art prompts in one sheet (so Dinoween, Dinovember, & Dino Winter Holidays) for ease of use. Also, because Dinovember often gets the shaft, and I feel reminding people of its existence would be helpful. 

Anyone can edit and add their name, but I have the original calendar to myself, so any changes to the prompts will be changed back. 

You can sign up to draw, write, make up poetry, songs, write informative things, whatever you want!!!! Just do something creative!!! And you can sign up for the other months too, just know that it won’t be a while until then! 

I have 10 sign up slots because if we get past that point for any one prompt, at that point you might as well just do what you want 

November, you’ll note, has three special holidays and mostly is “dinosaurs frolicking in the autumn.” If you have ideas for cultural-specific holidays (or any sort of November holiday) for the month, send them my way via an ask or fanmail or whatever!!! I’ll be sure to add them. 

[Note: I will not be running Dinomas this year for personal reasons. My partner, @plokool, will be doing so through A-Dinosaur-A-Day (so it’ll still be on this blog), but I will not be running it directly. I will be running Dinokkah and the Palaeoblr Secret Santa (which I might rename. Secret Sinosauropteryx? Stay tuned). Thanks!]

For Dinozaa today we have the Hamerkop, Scopus umbretta, which hails from the entirety of sub-Saharan Africa, and portions of the Arabian peninsula. It is also known from Madagascar. 

The Hamerkop lives in a lot of different wetland habitats, including estuaries, lakes, fish ponds, riverbanks, and rocky coasts. One of the most unusual things about it is that up to ten of them will join together in a ceremony, where they run circles around each other, calling loudly, raising their crests, and fluttering their wings. They also false-mounting, where one bird will go up to another and look as though it is mounting it, but they don’t actually mate!

Happy Dinozaa! This year I’ll be posting about cool modern dinosaurs - birds - known from Africa!

Here is the Somali Ostrich, Struthio molybdophanes, known from north-eastern Ethiopia and Somalia, in the Horn of Africa. It is a distinct species from the Common Ostrich, and diverged from it about 3.6 to 4.1 million years ago!

Dinosaur Kwanzaa; last year I reblogged dinosaurs from Africa, but I’d really like to have someone who celebrates the holiday organize it this year if possible.

Yup! And Dinoween! :D And Dinozaa but that didn’t have much last year
