Last week, the Diplomatic Security Service welcomed their newest Special Agents. Nearly half of the graduates served in the military and nearly all of them previously supported other government entities. The new Special Agents hail from fourteen different states, the District of Columbia and Nepal. Sometimes I could be an ass to my truck commander (TC). To be fair, he deserved it. The three of us, TC, driver, & paramedic comprised the Emergency Response Vehicle, or ERV, of a mobile diplomatic security detail. But really, we were good friends. It was our responsibility while en route to get to the limo (the principal's vehicle) in an emergency. Lucky for us that only happened one time. My mobile diplomatic security team trained daily... on & around the base where we were stationed overseas. Exceptions include most mission days & one rec day per week. But not every mission day. Good PSD requires coreography & synchronization. There are many moving parts. And, you could be attacked at any one of them, so you have to train for most eventualities. When the proverbial shit hits the fan, you as an operator will want your actions to be instinctual. This requires repetition through training. Adequate & realistic. I was lucky to have an amazing team leader who had an incredible amount of combat experience deployed in the early GWOT as an infantryman in Ranger Battalion.
