Today I worked with Franki later than usual, as her schedule is becoming more and more hectic as she draws towards hand-in. She is unsure whether or not she can still be my projection operator, as her workload is very heavy at the moment. Whilst I would love to have Franki as my operator, her decision comes first and I have assured her that if he needs to, Bradley can become an operator to take her place. I have asked her to give me a definite answer on Friday, so that I can plan ahead and train Bradley if it comes to it.

Today, we made lightning strikes for the storm scene. We tried to create bolts of lightning of Photoshop and Maya, but found they looked too flat and unrealistic. I suggested we try After Effects, as I saw Kavi using some of the presets on that program to make some of the projections for The Women.

We found a preset we really liked, but didn't know how to control it as an animation. So, our solution has been to screenshot the After Effects render window, and put that image onto Photoshop to animate. I really like the Photoshop animation features, as it is very simple and easy to tween between frames.

We have made several bolts of lightning videos in pairs, so I can cue them as and when they are needed.

Animation Update- 27th Oct.

Today Franki and I have been creating the stars animation, which will be used in many of the night-time scenes. Unlike the previous animations which we have done completely in Maya, we have drawn the background in Photoshop, and animated the shooting star in Maya.

I felt comfortable using Photoshop, as I am fairly competent and confident in the software, having used it throughout college and university. This meant that my input was more valuable, as I know more about what the program can do, and how to do it. I hope that as Franki teaches me the basics of more new programs, my input will become increasingly useful, and I will be able to take on some of the more basic animation tasks completely on my own.

In our sessions, I have taken on a Director role (stating what I want, positioning/ tweaking various elements and making decisions) whilst Franki has been using her technical knowledge of the software to realise my vision. I really enjoy collaborating in this way, as I can focus purely on the artistic side, without worrying about how I will animate it. Franki has great ideas on how to enhance the animations, and I think that by combining both our ideas and skillsets, we are creating really effective projections.

We have decided to use a static digital painting of a starry sky as the background, and animate the shooting star on a separate file, which we will then overlay. This means that I can cue the shooting star exactly when I need it using Modul8 to fade it in. This is an idea I got from Kavi, as she did a similar thing with one of the projections for'The Women'. We have also animated several glow stars in Maya. By combining my knowledge of Modul8 and Franki’s animation knowledge, we have come up with a surprisingly simple solution to what was going to be quite a complex animation.

"State your notes as clearly and succinctly as possible, use visuals whenever you can, and before you move on, ask the person you're giving the notes to if he or she understands it." Page 220

This was really helpful to help get into the right mindset when directing Franki's work. This has focused the way I give her notes for improvement, and I have found that I am now using quick sketches to illustrate what I want more and more. Double checking that the notes have been understood has also dramatically reduced our work time, as we seem to be getting it right the first time more often now. It is as the saying goes- 'Measure twice, cut once'.
