Tile Cleaning and those dirty Grout lines that drive us crazy.
Tired of scrubbing grout lines for what seems like forever and getting nowhere? Scrubbing and cleaning grout can be like sailing the ocean in a paddle boat. You are getting somewhere, but very. very.. very... slowly.
And what if I told you that the cleaning solution you are using may actually be harming your grout and can cause discoloration?
Well there you go, I just told you.
Do not be misled by home improvement stores who are just pushing products to increase sales. The best companies to get advice on cleaning and maintaining grout lines are THE TILE AND GROUT INSTALLERS themselves. They know exactly what products they are installing and can give the best advice for cleaning or sealing those pesky dirty little grout lines. If you happen to be in the Roseville / Sacramento area and are reading this call Gold Coast Flooring for the best tile cleaning Sacramento has to offer.
Grout is made up of three things. Cement, sand, and water. Unless you have unsanded grout, which is made up of cement with latex and polymers. So the cement is what makes grout so absorbent to liquid and dirt.
So basically what happens when you have a dirty floor is you usually sweep or vacuum and get rid of dirt and dust. But that only takes care of so much. After doing this step you mop or use a steamer to clean the floors. Well what happens is once water hits that grout it absorbs it like a sponge and takes in any left over dirt that was left on the tile and grout. And by mopping everything around, you are actually distributing this mix of dirty water and germs all over your flooring and into the grout lines. Multiply this by days and weeks and months, and eventually the grout lines become full of dirt and germs just like a sponge, except you cannot rinse the grout or buy a new one at wally world in a package like sponges.
This is when a professional tile cleaning company comes into play. They come in with truck mounted cleaning equipment (The Big Guns) to thoroughly rinse your grout out. Most tile in homes is man made, meaning ceramic or porcelain which lasts forever and is very easy to clean. The problem is the grout or if you have natural stone such as travertine or granite / marble / terrazo etc.
But anyways back to man made tile.
So when a tile and grout cleaning company comes in to clean your floors what should you expect? First they will measure the areas to be cleaned, then test certain areas throughout the home to show you the difference they can make and also to make sure no TOPICAL SEALANTS or WAX has been used on the floors. If you have been using products from home cheapo or blowes then expect for some serious money to be spent on restoration. Any product that claims to leave a shine or polish effect on your tile is a big NO NO. There is no way to make man made tile shiny or glossy. The only tile that shines is natural stone and this is done by polishing with a floor machine, not a product at the store for $9.95. So after making sure everything is fine and a price is agreed upon, the tech gets started. First step is sweeping and vacuuming dust and debris, second is taping off appliances and other areas depending on the cleaning solution being used. Third is to pre spray all the areas and scrub the grout lines with a specifically designed grout brush to release all those years of dirt and grime being pushed into those poor grout lines. Then they use equipment to rinse and extract the cleaning solution and dirt and grime. All that’s left is for the areas to dry and then seal the grout if desired.
Most of our customers are usually getting their tile and grout cleaned just to sell their home, so they skip the sealant, but if you are keeping your home, we highly recommend to seal your grout after cleaning. Imagine cleaning your driveway and it looks great, but you forgot to seal it and a friend comes over and his car leaks oil everywhere. If you had sealed, the oil would just bead up and would be fine, but since you just rinsed everything out of that porous concrete, it is a fresh sponge and soaks up that oil like it was dehydrated in the desert looking for water.
And that is pretty much it for tile and grout cleaning. If you are looking for the best tile cleaning and grout cleaning in your area make sure you always describe what you need cleaned and get more than 1 estimate before committing to one company.
