Il mio esperimento con Mojave è temporaneamente sospeso: l'avevo installato su un Mac che non utilizzerò in modo intensivo fino a dopo settembre ed avevo tentato la strada dell'aggiornamento diretto da High Sierra. Ovviamente non è una cosa da fare su computer primari o di produzione, ma in questo caso avrei dovuto accedere a quel Mac solo per messaggi o social per i prossimi 3 mesi e vista l'ottima stabilità riscontrata in iOS 12 ho deciso di buttarmi anche qui. Già nella prima Beta ho inviato almeno dieci feedback per problemi di ogni tipo, dalla stabilità ai glitch grafici, passando anche per la compatibilità con le stesse app di sistema. Una installazione pulita è sempre più efficace in questi casi, ma sappiamo che è la strada seguita da una minima percentuale di utenti (mi azzardo a dire ampiamente sotto il 5%). Ecco perché è importante che gli aggiornamenti funzionino bene e che traghettino l'utente con una quantità di inconvenienti piuttosto contenuta (meglio se assente nelle release finali). Al momento ci sono bug di ogni tipo, ma la cosa più assurda è stata ritrovarmi con le app di base, come Messaggi e Mail, che si bloccano subito dopo l'avvio. Succede anche con Telegram e qualche altra, ma su quelle di sistema proprio non me lo aspettavo. Per questo motivo ho pensato ad un rollback su High Sierra, giusto perché non riuscire neanche a leggere le email mi è sembrato davvero eccessivo. Nel farlo mi sono trovato di fronte alla solita domanda: come creare una pendrive con l'installazione pulita del sistema operativo precedente (in cui poi reimportare i dati con Time Machine)?

Di solito uso il terminale ma questa volta ho voluto seguire una strada ancora più easy. In primo luogo ho riscontrato un inconveniente: su macOS Mojave gli aggiornamenti di sistema sono stati spostati in una sezione dedicata delle Preferenze di Sistema e anche i precedenti OS sono spariti dal Mac App Store. In sostanza Apple dovrà trovare una soluzione a questa cosa, altrimenti sarà piuttosto complicato per chi lavora con i Mac effettuare operazioni di ripristino e manutenzione, specie su postazioni vecchie o di terzi. Inoltre la tipica shortcut ⌘⌥⇧R che installa il sistema operativo fornito all'acquisto del computer (o quello più vicino) con Mojave sopra non parte affatto. Immagino sia solo un bug ma ho dovuto comunque utilizzare un altro Mac per scaricare l'installer dell'ultima release di High Sierra dal Mac App Store e da lì ho utilizzato un software nuovo, migliore e ben più seguito di DiskMaker X. Si chiama Disc Creator, sempre gratuito ma compatibile ufficialmente sia con High Sierra che addirittura già con la beta di Mojave. In realtà il metodo per creare questi dischi è piuttosto semplice se si usa il terminale e da un po' è rimasto costante, quindi non è complicato adeguare la compatibilità, ma già il fatto di vedere sull'homepage del vecchio DiskMaker X "compatibile con Sierra" col bollino stile grande novità ti fa venir voglia di chiudere la pagina e passare oltre.

Ricapitalando, da un computer con una versione di macOS precedente a Mojave potete effettuare il download dei sistemi operativi "acquistati" con il vostro account tramite il Mac App Store: basta trovarli nella sezione Acquistati, cliccare ed attendere che i circa 2/3GB vengano scaricati nella cartella Applicazioni. Al termine partirà il setup ma voi chiudetelo. Lanciate Disc Creator e inserite una pendrive da almeno 16GB nel computer (non andate molto oltre perché lo spazio in più sarebbe sprecato), selezionatelo nella prima tendina e poi trascinate l'installer dalla cartella Applicazioni sullo spazio al centro (in alternativa è possibile usare il Finder dopo aver cliccato sul pulsante "Choose a macOS installer..."). Attendete il termine della procedura ed avrete una chiavetta con il sistema operativo pronta per essere usata: collegatela al Mac interessato e poi premete ⌥ al riavvio per selezionare l'unità.
