Discipleship pt 4

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. (Matthew 16:25 NKJV)

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. (Mark 8:35 NKJV)

For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. (Luke 9:24 NKJV)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (John 12:25 NKJV)

This is one of the only if not the only sayings of Jesus that finds its way into all four gospels. If we are his disciples that should mean something to us. This is one of those sayings of Jesus that is hard to hear even though what he says is painfully clear. In fact this verse is very uncomfortable. It shows us why some people never find real significance in life - because they were not willing to lose their life that they might find it. I will not even try to interpret this scripture. The Bible interprets the Bible. When it comes to this verse Jesus found this verse to be so important that he interprets it himself. So as to leave no room for any confusion or misunderstanding. 

In Luke 17 the Pharisees ask Jesus a question. He responds to them with a parable and then begins to address his disciples. In this discourse Jesus gives us a picture of what it looks like to try to save your life. "Remember Lot’s wife. Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it." (Luke 17:32-33 NKJV) If you read the account of Lot the Angel told the family not to look back. Lot's wife did and was turned into a pillar of salt. Jesus interprets her look back to Sodom and Gomorrah as she was "seeking to save her life." There is no other way to take that verse because Jesus interpreted it for us. Those who are seeking to save their life seem to be more interested in the past than the future. I don't fully comprehend all of the implications of this verse, but I do know it is a serious verse not to be passed over lightly. "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 NKJV) The word "logos" which is the word used to describe Jesus in John 1:1 is a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the heart. That truth becomes visible when Jesus declares the motives of Lot's wife in plain language. There is a lesson here for us in Biblical Interpretation. When the Bible interprets something said in the Bible that is the correct interpretation and everything else is speculation at best. The disciples of Jesus are those who continue in his word, therefore we must make an effort to know the word of God. Disciples are those who ask the Holy Spirit what does God's word say about the situation at hand. Whatever is going on in your life ask the Holy Spirit to show you what God says about those circumstances in the word of God. Continue in the words of Jesus. Don't look down or backwards keep looking upwards and forwards with expectation. Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you. You are not a failure and you have not been forgotten or overlooked. The Lord Jesus is with you and he will make that clear to the world around you. Be encouraged and stay focused on Jesus and his mission.
