"The Way Home..." Perhaps there are no better means to finding 'the way home' than having steady employment. How does that occur except for the care and concern of the community at large working with Union Rescue Mission to provide opportunities for graduates of the Christian Life Discipleship Program?
Two men were willing to take that challenge in June of 2011 — giving of their own time and energies to mentor 10 men ready to claim their lives back. John Kennelly and Will Nicklas of Toyota Motor Sales met weekly in an 8-week process to prepare 10 men for the potential rigors of the job seeking process ... a process challenging 10 men to step beyond their personal comfort zones.
It became a process that transformed these two mentors as well. "I just came here to help out," confessed John Kennelly, "and I got transformed instead." Their goal was to fine tune each man's interview skills and to present a resume underscoring their noticeable skills. No one was assured of employment; the mentoring focused on long-term job skills assessment.
No one, not even John and Will, anticipated what happened next.
This Thanksgiving, that's what I'm thankful for.
