🪗 CHARANGA CAMPESINA 🪗 As cumbia music moved away from Colombia’s Caribbean coast and into the valley, its musical form evolved lyrically and expressively. Vallenatos (translates to “from the valley”) combine the guacharaca, a wooden percussion instrument created by the rural Tairona people; the caja, a drum that originated from African slaves; and the accordion, a European instrument. Traveling musicians brought songs to the working class that told of love, heartbreak and news from other regions. Calixto Ochoa’s “Charanga Campesina” is a perfect example of a classic vallenato.
