When was the last time you went out a bought a used toothbrush? How about the last time you bought some used Band-Aids? Gross…right? As much as I love a good bargain (and I do), there are some things in life that I’ll only take in NEW condition. Germs aside, there is just a feeling I get when I open a new package, knowing I am the very first person that gets to use whatever the item may be. I mean, hey, there’s a reason why they have a car freshener called “new car scent”. Think about the last time you opened something new. What was the scent? What did it sound like? Maybe you heard the sound of popping bubble wrap? Maybe you saw that smudge protector that they put on fragile screens. I’m sure we could all agree that there is always something to experience from a brand new thing.
There are also those things in life that aren’t so easy to recognize as new. It could be the new flowers growing in springtime that you run past. Maybe it’s your friend’s fresh haircut. Some things take a glance or two before we catch on to what’s new. I’ll admit some of the hardest things to perceive are the new things within. I’m not talking about the new pounds on the scale (or maybe those are old friends), but I’m talking about the new work that God desires to do in me. Maybe it’s the new patience I have waiting in a line at the store. It could be the new response of confidence I have when I’m asked to do something scary like speak in front of a large crowd. The point is, God is always doing something new in my life, but it’s up to me to perceive it.
And guess what? I believe He’s always doing something new in YOU too. Think about it. How are you different from the person you were a year ago? Maybe you work a little harder in school. Maybe you walk with your head just a little higher. Maybe you have a new compassion for others. Maybe you like the person you see in the mirror just a bit more. Whatever it is, embrace it! The brand new, that’s in you, is what the world has been waiting for.
With love from the ONE up above,
