eldest of the charming children and thus the next in line to inherit the illustrious title of duke of cinderellasburg, henry is not exactly the ‘prince charming’ one would hope for. it is not to say that he isn’t charming -- on the contrary, he can bd quite dashing and charismatic, as a young man of his station is expected to be. that is when he wants to be. it’s just that henry isn’t the romantic hero he’s expected to be. conceited. arrogant. insincere. hedonistic. these are all words that have been used to describe him, and it’s a reputation that has spread to the far corners of auradon. 

the only reason he isn’t totally hated is that he just happens to be one of the most eligible noble bachelors around. the only male heir to a duke, many a maiden has lined up hoping to win his affections, some even going as far as stumbling into his bed only to soon find out that while there exist a space for them in his arms, there is no opening in his heart. 

this hasn’t stopped mothers, those ruthless and conniving creatures, from attempting to win the young earl’s favor by thrusting their dainty daughters in his way. henry at times goes along with it, but he at other times keeps a far distance. he spends copious amounts of money every year traveling to foreign lands, educating himself on everything he can think to as some feeble attempt to avoid the inevitable: the horrid thought of settling down. he likewise gambles his fortune in senseless underground fights and poker games -- sometimes being a fighter in the ring of the former to pay off debts owed. he’s less gentleman and more scoundrel or ruffian when he’s away from court and he much prefers it that way. 

while many a damsel has fallen into the silk sheets of the earl of citrouille’s bed, he doesn’t limit himself to feminine bed partners. he is not seeking a wife, but he seeks company in many alluring grins and gorgeous faces he meets. woman or man, it makes no difference. passion is passion, make no mistake of it. but the earl is discreet about his interest in the same sex. while there are those who accept homosexuality in auradon, there are a great many who do not and many of those are denizens of the lands henry is set to inherit. out of obligation of keeping his reputation as a honourable gentleman in tact he has gone to great lengths to keep his bisexuality under wraps, and more secure his own heart out of fear he could grow an attachment to another man. or anyone, really.

while he can come across careless and stoic, make no mistake -- henry cherishes his younger siblings. he would do anything for them and wishes to see them well. it’s why he’s shouldered the burden of their family’s title rather than relinquish it to his younger brother as he sometimes wishes he could. he knows that such a title comes with limitations which could keep either of his siblings from having freedoms they should be awarded. he would rather bear the brunt of being the earl of citrouille and future duke of cinderellasburg than see them bothered by the responsibility. that being said, he also guards their reputations closely. 

as his father the duke is much too busy with matters in cinderellasburg, henry has taken it upon himself to be head of the family during the season in auradon city, and as such vets the prospective suitors of his most dearest little sister. he knows finn can handle himself in court (at least he hopes he can) so he spends most of his time being an intimidating (and incredibly overbearing) presence for his little sister, careful to keep her from harm’s way as they navigate the dramatic season. this also keeps him from being cornered and forced into conversations over when he himself might settle down.

despite his dutiful approach to the family title, henry is very worried of his future. with no desire to take a wife, and a growing resentment towards his position as eldest son, he grows more and more frustrated by the expectations being laid on his shoulders. he wishes for things to be different, for himself to have more control, more freedoms. his choice of rebelling is by avoiding the “duty” to settle down and procure an heir, seemingly satisfied to die a bachelor if it came down to it. it’s more fun that way -- he could have whomever he wanted whenever he wanted without worry of scandalizing a lady of court.

The Great Stromboli’s Marionette Show, one of the premiere traveling shows in all the land. Run by the indomitable Gianni Bernardi — better known as Stromboli — it was for a long time considered to be one of the best attractions around. People would eagerly await the day his caravan came rolling into town, when he would set up his stage and bring out his many colorful puppets to entertain. Stromboli was so beloved, it was hard for many to reconcile the starry eyed puppet master for the violent kidnapper he was claimed to be. If only that were some kind of lie.

Gianluca — or simply John — is highly suspicious on whether or not the bearded villain is his actual father. For as long as he can remember, he’s been with Stromboli. Living in a run down caravan as it dashed from town to town, sleeping on a potato’s sack on a hardwood floor and being given table scraps. It’s a wonder how he’s grown so tall and strong. Not so much a wonder how he’s grown to be cruel and aloof. Stromboli was not a warm or loving parent — most of the “villain” types aren’t. All he ever cared about was how he could profit off a person. What kind of benefit they offered.

Before the war and the mirror world, back when they lived topside full time, he expected a lot out of John. He taught him how to dance, sing, vault, all circus relevant forms of entertainment. He disguised the boy as a stringless puppet, just like the one he lost. He was going to make a fortune off Pinocchio, he would make due somehow. John was that solution, the kid he was “stuck with” who would dutifully do as he was told, unless he wanted to be beat with a switch or worse — burned. His body carries the reminders of all of that.

But was Stromboli his father? He thought so. He knew he “belonged” to him. As a kid John assumed that meant that he was Stromboli’s son and Stromboli was his dad. Plain and simple. That was until the war, anyway. He was still young, but he was getting older; maybe around 8 or 9 when the war began. He didn’t fully understand what they were doing during the whole thing. They still travelled, but they rarely performed. Instead of marionettes, the caravan was full of weapons and rotting corpses. Errands for her Excellency, Maleficent of the Moors. That’s what he saw scribbled on parchment paper on his father’s desk. He didn’t fully know it, but they were the suppliers of her dark army — both the items they needed and the actual bodies which filled it. As battle upon battle happened, they stormed through the carnage and picked up whatever bodies were (mostly) in tact, and whatever items could be salvaged.

So that’s what they did — they transported whatever the dark faerie needed. And when all things were said and done, their caravan among the blood and carnage on Corona’s cobbled streets during that final battle, they found themselves on the losing side of a Great War. As they were sentenced and lead through a magic mirror to a desolate world, Stromboli, with a vice grip on John, revealed the truth: He was not Gianni Bernardi Jr. He was actually Luca De Rossi, the lost son of a noble house. But it hadn’t mattered — he was going away to the shadow realm, forever property of a kidnapper and false father, never to return to find his family again. Or so it seemed.

For 25 years John lived in that nightmare, the victim of constant abuse and harassment from the once great showman who chose the wrong side. Haunted by the fact that his real family probably lived in a somewhat happy splendor in the newly christened Auradon, unaware of where their lost boy was. They probably thought him dead, or maybe turned into a donkey by the coachman and never to be spirited back. Instead, he was stuck in the gloomy Shadow Realm living with a drunkard who could be charismatic and warm one second but volatile and dangerous the next. He never knew where Stromboli’s mercurial moods would go, John just knew he would be the receiver of them. A real boy like Pinocchio had wanted to be, yet John felt like a puppet on invisible strings always at the mercy of his master.

He was already a man when the decree came, just four years beyond thirty. While as a boy he’d secretly hoped for a day like this to come, his adolescence among murderers and thieves, in the custody of his abuser, had killed the hope within John. He became coarse and cruel and hard, much like his father. But he buried the warmth and childlike wonder he used to possess. It was how he protected himself — and some of the weaker others — in their dark world. It was how he withstood his imprisonment. When the princess made her decree, he felt bitter. Bitter and angry for how delayed this was. He almost didn’t want to go, but then he remembered the truth that had been revealed to him: His family was in Auradon.

For this sole reason John had agreed to go, rebranding himself as Gianluca (or John Luke) Bernardi, the name he’s always born (Gian) and the name of his suspected mother (Lucia). He cannot take the De Rossi name upon himself, not until he can prove to them he’s the son they lost. They’re no longer nobility, just a wealthy established family in the city. A Baronet, with the head of the family being the aging Sir Alessandro De Rossi. A family with no heirs. If he could prove to them he’s one of them, then if the princess rescinds her offer to the Shadowborn he will not suffer the consequence of returning. He could stay there in the sun, and away from Stromboli. He could inherit what has always been rightfully his.

Upon his arrival, he’s done his best to begin blending in. Not the most friendly of men, but certainly among the stylish. He took his skills from his early years on his father’s caravan, carving jolly whimsical puppets and doing a show in the square whenever he can, earning a little change. He’s swallowed swords, juggled and fire danced in the dirty streets, and even used his stealth acrobatic skills for less savory employers to earn coin by night. Gathered the allowance they are sometimes given by their keepers. He puts some away, some he spends on finer clothes. Clothes to cover the years of hurt and toil reaped upon his body. Clothes that made him look like he could belong. He’s studied lineage records in Old Town, hoping to come across something he could use to prove his origins.

He’s constantly busying himself with plans to make this a permanent stay — as well as busying himself with the company that can be had in Auradon. A rake, that’s the term he’s heard. He’s been told he’s a shoe in for one. Grouchy, yes, but promiscuous and stylish and ambitious for wealth and status that is rightfully his. The truth is John’s so wounded and craves human touch and affection in ways he’s never had, and doesn’t know how to properly receive it beyond a night of passion with strangers. He doesn’t know how to be soft, doesn’t think he deserves real affection and love. And most are unaware of the trauma, and simply presume he’s a Casanova or lothario when in actuality he’s anything but. That all aside, he doesn’t care if a rake is what he’s being branded — it doesn’t matter as long as at the end his goals are achieved. And he’ll do anything to find his permanent home in Auradon. Anything.

caradoc fflam, renown minstrel and traveling bard known in every far corner of the world for his soft tenor and the elegant pluck of his lute, it is hard to contend with the fact that cary, as he is so affectionately called, is not the offspring of a sweet and nurturing love match. born just a year after the pigkeeper taran saved the world from the horned king’s first attempt at having a cauldron born army, caradoc is the bastard child of taran’s older musician companion, fflewddur fflam. when the witch orwen, so lovesick over the bard, could not contend with his lack of desire for her, she felt no choice but to revert to the dark magic she and her sisters commonly practiced. and so by use of a love potion she bewitched fflewddur to be hers for a single, passionate night. her aim was to get pregnant and tie the uninterested bard to her, but it did not go according to her plan. once the magic wore away, fflewddur realized what happened and felt violated and angry. he vowed to have nothing to do with orwen. except that she did in fact become pregnant, but spurned by her lover she left the baby with him

upon finding the wrapped babe almost a year after the assault, fflewddur went from being a rambunctious bachelor to a devoted single father in the span of a single moment. from the second he looked into the eyes of his son, he had a deep love for the child. despite his origin, to which he never would hold caradoc liable to, he vowed to love and protect the boy and raised him to be a smart, sensible, and regrettably passive boy. he thought if he did not raise cary to have the same irresistible charms which lead to his unfortunate circumstance with orwen that he could save the boy from such terrors. instead he bred an unintentionally aloof and shy boy, but fflewddur didn’t see any bad in this. where he could be extravagant and quixotic, caradoc was more practical and sensible, and his sweet nature made him warm and likable.

the only things the men seem to share in common, aside from a warm affection for the dallbens, was a deep affinity for music, poetry and romanticism. caradoc took to these with vigor, and upon his eighth birthday he was gifted with his very first instrument: a lute. but not just any lute; it was a magical instrument, much like his father’s truth telling lyre. it’s a fickle instrument, one which will react to the tumultuous feelings which cary hides beneath his timid demeanor. if cary feels unconfident, no matter how well trained he is on the instrument it just won’t agree with him, playing out of tune and snapping strings in protest of its insecure master. if he tells a little white lie, as he rarely does mostly out of protection for others, it will whine in sour notes and snap at him. it constantly betrays him, especially and most humiliating in matters of love, even when he is trying to approach things with a practical and sensible viewpoint.

he is neither wealthy or a man of consequence, and so cary has never had much luck during a social season. in fact, outside of performance, he is sometimes seen as dull and impassionate company, mostly due to his own nerves and shyness keeping him from being overly expressive. in fact, he’s rather inhibited where deep emotions are concerned. nowadays he mostly comes to the ton to perform as his first love is music, but he is a handsome young man and has caught the eyes of beauties as they sometimes have caught him. he’s just never been able to close anything given his timid nature. and since he’s not some passionate hero who confidently professes love within a societally acceptable amount of time (read: quickly), cary had a tendency to lose out to more dashing suitors simply by giving off the impression that he was not as interested — even when his heart had been deeply in it. for this reason, he’s had many a heartbreak which has always translated into lovesick ballads.

caradoc is a quiet soul, gentle and warm, a wise advisor to many, though he has few confidants himself. he counts the dallbens as practically family, and he’s only willing to be completely candid with them and a few other close friends. but his shyness has left him with few connections, despite the interest in the talented minstrel. he’s travelled far across the world in search of ancient songs from various cultures, and often sings of tales from distant kingdoms. he has a far reached reputation career wise and so of his few close friends he counts many from afar. he floats to unique individuals because he likes having truly interesting muses for his work. 

in a way he is seeking his ultimate muse, the one who will inspire his magnum opus. he fancies the idea of a great love story being his life’s greatest work, though the idea of singing of heroes much like his father did following the cauldron war is equally as fascinating to him. if only he were able to truly close any deals and find himself in the company of someone so truly remarkable and willing to share their story with him for the sake of beautiful commemorative art.

he was a young boy during the events of the cauldron war, and the years of reconstruction following. he saw the devastation of war up close, and while he also saw the birth of a great and powerful kingdom, he saw the growing pains that came with this, the darker side of the fairy tale, and for this reason he is anxious for the arrival of the shadow born. cary doesn’t wish to be pessimistic but he fears a repeat of what happened before and for that reason he is very cautious around the newcomers. especially the child of the horrifying horned king.

BIOGRAPHY

Standing tall upon the emerald cliffs of the Northern Highlands lays Castle DunBroch. Decrepit, choked by ivy, and crumbling to the ground, the castle is the epicenter of Clan DunBroch’s Kingdom and the homestead of its fierce and courageous leader, Queen Merida. Despite its decaying state, there is no hearth warmer in all of The Northern foothills as the one within the castle walls. It’s a gorgeous and impressive ancient castle that any of the Highland Lairds would die to possess… all except the one poised to inherit it.

To Conall Rory Muiròn DunBroch, the fog-dense woods and mystical hills, that vast and rich realm surrounding the castle are his kingdom. It’s there among the kelpies, the will-o-the-wisps and the witches rumored to be within that Conall finds comfort. With as much daring nerve as his equally scarlet haired mother, it’s of little surprise that the boy feels more at ease in the wild moors - Merida herself was known to spend hours in the confines of the forest, climbing Crone’s Tooth and drinking from the golden streams of The Fire Falls. Targets long since forgotten by the queen’s bow are now claimed by her son’s adept arrow, this now his domain to run barefoot and free through.

His childhood was thus charmed and wild and free in the glen. Before Conall even know how to walk or talk, he knew how to notch and shoot a bow with the deathly precision his queen mother was known for. He likewise practically grew up upon the back of shire horses, growing to be an adept rider. Through his queen mother he learned how to be fearless, adventurous, determined and free spirited, and through his other mother — his selkie mother Lady Aileen of Muiròn — he learned to be compassionate and nurturing, a protector of the land and sea and its non-human inhabitants. He would say anything strong and fierce in him was Merida and anything soft and gentle in him was Aileen.

As a child thus he was equal parts boisterous and sensitive. Brash and prone to acting before thinking, and often times a bit emotional when consequences were dolled out. That sensitive and sweet part of him often got the better of him as a kid, and made him the brunt of teasing from the other lairds. Such was the effect of having two mothers to rear the lad, instead of a strong male presence, as the other clan leaders would say.

As he grew into adolescence Conall grew weary of the teasing and began to change. That’s how he became stoic, quiet and stern, hiding away the softer touch of his mothers beneath a serious expression and only really to be seen by his mare Sorcha and the few he held in such close company, like his band of fellow Highlander warriors who rode across the wild hills and fought the other unaffiliated clans in petty border scrimmages for most of his adult life. The cruel way the other clansmen, the Lairds of Macintosh, MacGuffin and Dingwall, spoke of him and his selkie mother made Conall feel less and less like he belonged in the court of DunBroch, and so he threw himself into his crusading across the emerald north, preferring to be more a soldier than a prince.

He’s never been to the southern kingdom, never been part of a “social season”. The highlands were wild and romantic, but not at all refined. Still, Queen Merida participated in the Cauldron War, and held a steadfast friendship with the monarchs of Auradon. As the historical law to allow the children of villains was put to pass, she decided to journey south to see firsthand what would be the fruits of the Princess’s first royal decree, and her less than enthused son was forced along. So he’s there, staying in a freshly purchased townhome by the seaside of Auradon City, a coveted visitor to society but not an actual participant. It’s supposedly no more than a cordial visit to their southern neighbors, but Conall has the suspicion his mothers are planning something else entirely. They have long since hinted at a desire to see their son settle down in the castle that will be his upon their deaths, to start a family and to hear the patter of infant feet on the stone floors of DunBroch. Where else to vet potential wives than upon the Auradonian marriage mart? Conall is not desperate to do so, though it’s mostly because he’s far too coarse and rough around the edges for the genteel society of Auradon, and he doubts even the most polite of ladies could soften his crags and ridges.

under a canopy of shimmering stars and iridescent skies, the vale of the faeries is a realm so far separate from the grounded reality of auradon and yet the two worlds are deeply connected. the stories and the magic which has prevailed in auradon would not exist without the vale of the faeries after all, and their winged inhabitants that have played compatriot to many a damsel and youth in need. like all lands, there needs to be law and order within faerie and as such there needs to be a royal family to guide them. within the vale of the faeries there has existed such a family for centuries — the petits of the vale. with their current high king cornelius and high queen thumbelina, the family continues to strive and lead the faerie realm.

among the impish and charming members of the faerie court there is a young willowy man who spends his days lounging by the silver rivers, eating crimson and violet berries and lazily playing a bamboo panflute. upon his head he wears a wreath of golden leaves on green vines and long shimmery robes which match the iridescence of his writhing wings. day by day, this young faerie wastes away in the sunlight, spends nights in the arms of different lovers, and drinks merrily with the various court members, none the wiser of the world beyond and it’s many intricacies. but such is the carefree life of a faerie prince.

sevastyan jacquimo colbert petit was born at the turn of the century, on the first coloring of the springtime flowers in the year 1800. it was tradition for the high king and high queen to away to auradon in order to herald in spring in the other world but for the first time in centuries, the presiding royals did not appear. the birth of a new crown prince was more important, after all. the only son of the reigning monarchs, sevastyan needn’t want for anything at all his whole life. aside from the fact that the faerie realm had positively anything anyone could need, and everything was easy to conjure up with magic at your finger tips, the prince was heavily doted upon and cared for. if he desired anything, then someone would bring it directly to him at his request. there were many that assumed that should they dote deeply upon the prince then they could be in his favor, and thus in the favor of the crown. fae were a finicky and self centered people, anything they could do to help propel themselves forward they would take.

for his part, sevastyan became just as he was expected to be: charming, good humored, winsome and elegant. handsome, though that was expected from fae. like other faeries he was impish and puckish, prone to harmless pranks and tomfoolery. a benevolent trickster at heart, he was likewise known for being rather amorous and freely open with his sexuality. monogamy was a construct in faerie but not exactly a popular idea. with how long faeries lived, they didn’t feel the need to limit to one partner and this was a concept sevastyan took to. he had lovers all across the realm, and when he began making appearances in auradon to usher in the equinoxes, he began finding lovers among the mortals. he relished in passionate flings, but didn’t allow his attention to be kept for long. he could be seen as a cad by the many spurned lovers he’d left behind, but it was simply the faerie way. faeries were natural lovers of all things beautiful and vibrant, so why couldn’t he appreciate all the pretty little things that existed all around him?

despite his polyamorous ways, it is somewhat expected for sevastyan to seek out a spouse. there are clear favorites among the faeries in both the vale, auradon and pixie hollow — for one, he has found a faerie from neverland he quite enjoys the company of — and while it isn’t very common, his parents are even open to the possibility of a human spouse so long as it means seeing sevastyan settled down and on his way to becoming high king. they feel it’s time for him to become more serious, to take the duty of monarch more solemnly. so his appearance in auradon is both because he was to lead the coloring of flowers but also because they want him to learn the ways of polite society and courtship. perhaps under the stifling decorum of auradon’s marriage mart, sevastyan can desire to seek out a companion for life.

of course it’s not easy. sevastyan is polite, and courteous, and charming and suave, and he has a grasp of formality and manners. however, sevastyan also doesn’t have the same social courtesies as others. he doesn’t fully understand the decorum and social niceties that the others run their lives by and instead finds auradon society to be rather boring. he aims to cause a stir, to create situations in auradon for harmless fun and unraveling of the stuffy way people act. he loves the idea of the shadow realm citizens now in auradon. while he has no enemy to fear from the other side of the enchanted mirror, he finds a wicked pleasure in using their arrival to cause some mischief and merriment. anything to help the nobles loosen up and have some fun for a bit.

arendelle was one of the... odder providences of auradon, if there were any. while some grand houses held the acquaintanceship of fairy godmothers and dwarves, dog-like creatures, and talking crabs, there were few that could boast a menagerie of sentient snow men, trolls who were self proclaimed love experts, the literal elements, or the fact that a literal reindeer was treated like a member of the family and had a seat at the dinner table. arendelle was an old land, but a mighty unconventional one. so it bothers astrid that she’s sort of normal in comparison. she doesn’t have her mother’s exuberant quirky energy, instead she inherited a quiet sensibility from her father. but she did have anna’s fierce loyalty and stubborn streak, as well as her sense of selflessness. she figured if she faced the ordeals her dearest mother had when she were around her age, astrid may prove to be as brave as her as well. but it was the 19th century, and positively nothing was that bad following the cauldron war. so she grew up quiet and sweet and incredibly gentle. motherly was a term most often associated with her, nurturing and warm.

she spent much of her youth traversing the safer parts of the enchanted forest, visiting with her aunts elsa and honeymaren, and the members of the northuldra tribe. she watched the earth giants slowly walk through the trees, giggled as gale blew her, her brother and cousin up in the air, snuggled the warm bruni, and watched the nokk from afar in utter awe. if they were not visiting family in the enchanted forest, then they were spending time with their father kristoff’s adopted family, the trolls, hearing stories of the past and the magic that flows nearby. or at the very least, she was following after her brother alongside that silly sentient snowman, uncle olaf, who, hilariously enough, was astrid’s god father. whatever they did, there was always something happening with the bjorgmans. family was incredibly important so they spent all their time focused on each other.

astrid adores none quite as much as her brother eivor. two years his junior, she looks up to him and deeply admires him. he was in a way the first person she mothered. where she was warm and gentle, eivor was more reckless and adventurous. she worried after him, even as a young child, and such a worry continues even into adulthood. she’s aware he is a grown man and can take care of himself, but it doesn’t stop her from checking in on him, fixing up his hair or anything out of place on his appearance, and making sure he’s healthy and well; bringing him homemade baked goods and the like, questioning whether he has had enough sleep. family was the focal point for the arendellians, and this manifested so strongly in how she attempted to look after him, though there are other reasons some argue astrid focuses too hard on eivor and their cousin (to be elaborated below)

the same dedicated watchfulness extended of course to jissika. astrid loves her brother, as previously illustrated, but she certainly wished she had a sister to emulate the relationship her mother and aunt shared. luckily she was given the next best thing in her cousin. while they didn’t live exactly close, anna and elsa made sure to raise their families closely, and so she spent a lot of time growing up with jissika. their bond felt less like cousins and more sisterly, at least she tried to make it so. it was exciting for her to have her cousin join them when they went into town. another young lady around was never a bad thing, especially if eivor was too occupied with lordship duties.

in short; she’s just a big family oriented softie.

it is somewhat surprising to see astrid in society again, especially since she hadn’t really been on the scene for seven years. but it was not for scandalous or odd reasons she had been so scarce in auradon city. following the close of her first season, at the tender age of 18, astrid had done exactly that which every young lady aspires to: she married. when she’d debuted in the spring of 1818, a doe eyed redhead anxious to appear before the queen, she’d not been exactly the most coveted young lady. she wasn’t deemed the diamond of the season, and she didn’t catch the eye of many a suitor. just enough to be called on and relatively busy for the better part of the season, but nothing too astonishing. she didn’t really seem eager to build connections anyway, though it wasn’t exactly because she didn’t like the men she met. the truth was that they just didn’t hold a candle to the object of her affections, the same young man she’d cared for since she was but a young girl running about in her village: dilon mattias, the son of the general destin mattias who lead security for the earl and countess of arendelle. not even the dandiest of lords could keep her attention from the strapping lieutenant back home. when he’d finally gained the courage to travel to auradon city to ask her hand, astrid ended her season swiftly and prepared to marry the only boy she thought could ever hold her fancy.

their’s was a charmed and blissful happiness, a match made out of love instead of obligation or nobility. as the younger daughter of an earl, it didn’t quite matter if she married for status anyway — and given her father was once an ice harvester, what did it matter of the humble origin or occupation of her spouse? what mattered to astrid was that she was happy, happy and in love with a wonderful man who she would spend the rest of her happily ever after with. what neither knew was that happily ever after would be far more short than any anticipated. she swears she remembers so little of that day and yet she has a strong impression of the feelings and notions of it. she had been fast asleep, in the east wing of her family’s estate which she and her husband had occupied for five years now. it was a quiet and peaceful morning; the sun had been barely up and the sky was a dull gray. it was early winter, and a frost had settled upon arendelle over night. it would snow all day, and she would trouble dilon to go on a sleigh ride through the fresh snow later on once it settled. all was well... but as she slept lightly, a terrible feeling settled into astrid’s stomach. feeling sickly and sour, she woke with a start and reached beside her.... only to find an empty space instead of a warm body. upon the pillow lay a long note which she hastily read. a goodbye, should the events of that morning not go well.

the details are lost to her, and dilon’s confidant from that morning has yet to give her the peace of mind by telling her exactly what caused it. all she knows is this, sometime between all their bliss and happiness, dilon and another soldier had a falling out of sorts, which accumulated in a duel. they drew pistols at dawn, and dilon, afraid of the consequences as duels were outlawed and there was always a chance one wouldn’t return, did not dare speak a word to her about it. he had only revealed the plan in a letter left behind that very morning. realizing that dawn was upon her, astrid hurried to leave and find him, to stop the nonsense and preserve her happiness. but as she pulled on a coat and ran to get sven from his pen, there was already a footman leading a distraught soldier to the drawing room, followed by a servant calling on her. she didn’t meet with that man. she didn’t have to. she knew instantly upon news that one of her husband’s friends was there to meet with her what had happened. she can’t recall how long she was left there crumpled on the stables floor, sobbing, but it had been for most of that morning. tragedy struck, in an avoidable stupid way.

that was a year ago. the period for mourning, according to society, had now long passed, though astrid feels that she’s still in the throw of it at times. per her family’s suggestion, she has arrived in auradon city for the social season as a way to break out of her grief and socialize with her peers. she finds it somewhat humiliating, as it’s obvious that’s not the only reason she’s out again. to be a spinster is bad enough, but to be such a young widow can be an awkward predicament to find oneself in at court. the bjorgmans would like to see their daughter remarried and happy again. except to some people she is damaged goods, far too old and not handsome enough to tempt a second chance. she herself doesn’t entertain the idea. she had her one grand love, it would be selfish to expect another. instead she goes to be in the company of her cousin and brother, and the friends she’s made at court, to make new friends among the shadowborn and to play the part of a loving supportive role to the others seeking matches that season. it hurts her less to focus on their happiness than to think of herself and what she’s lost. it is for that reason alone she tolerates her return, tolerates being called by her maiden name instead of by her married one. as though the best way to forget is to erase it and pretend as though it never happened, something she has not come to terms with at all.

Daphne’s parents were actually distant relatives of the Fairy Godmother, which was how her adoption came to be. The Fairy Godmother wasn’t exactly looking for a child, but when it was brought to her attention that poor Daphne, at just two years old, had nowhere else to go after a terrible carriage accident, the older woman simply couldn’t say no.

You might think that being adopted meant that Daph inherited no magical abilities, but that would be incorrect. Whatever magical blood that runs through her adoptive mother’s veins runs through hers as well (though simply in a lesser amount). Therefore, with a wave of a wand Daphne has similar abilities. Perhaps not as strong, but ever since the dawn of her thirteenth year she’s been working with her mother to strengthen her abilities. One never knows when someone might need a Fairy Godmother and sadly her mother was already on the older side when she was adopted.

The need to help others was instilled in Daphne at a very young age. She had the perfect example to look up to, with her mother having so selflessly helped Cinderella. The same selflessness was encouraged in her... almost too much. She was taught to care less about her needs than those of others. She has never been good at putting herself first.

While she definitely has an interest in magic, and knows it’s her duty to be the next Fairy Godmother, Daph also has a keen interest in art. She’s travelled across the kingdom and seen some of the best. She’s also taken it up for herself. While most of the time her work is just for her, it’s a not-very-well-kept secret that she’s responsible for the backdrops that rest behind the performers at the Opera - an arrangement made for her by her mother, but one she’s incredibly thankful for.

Daphne has been out in society for years. At this point she is essentially considered to be on the shelf. A spinster. It’s not that no one was ever interested, but nothing ever felt right and she simply couldn’t muster up the right feelings. She’s not necessarily content with being ‘past her prime’ when she is still so young, but there is little to be done about it.

Daphne is nervous about the arrival of those from the Shadow Realm. She believes there is a very good reason why their worlds were separated, and she’s moderately paranoid about what the fallout of such a decision could be.

Lydia was a child created out of love. Her mother had fallen in love with a baker in Auradon, and they were set to be married. With that knowledge in mind, Lydia had been conceived pre-wedding day. But before the blissful day of matrimony could arrive, her life was ruined. In Lydia’s mind, there was no one whose life was shattered more with the banishment to the Shadow Realm than hers. Her father was deemed good, and allowed to remain in Auradon. Her mother, who had never done anything half as bad as those who she would come to live near, was deemed a villain. And they were separated.

Lydia’s mother had actually been a reformed mean girl prior to the split, the chance to fall in love and move away from her own mother’s influence having corrected her ways. But the second the love of her life was torn from her and she was thrust into single motherhood, all that progress was thrown out the window. Anastasia Tremaine grew harsh and cold and distant, Lydia serving as a constant reminder of what could have been.

To hear her mother tell it, her father had been given a choice. And he had chosen incorrectly. Lydia isn’t sure if she believes there was really a choice involved, and definitely prefers to blame the Royal Family for the decree, but she harbors a great deal of resentment towards her father as well.

But not as much resentment as she feels towards the Charmings. In her mind they could have spoken up, could have pointed out that at no point had Anastasia (or her sister) tried to commit murder, as so many of the banished had. They could have been given a second chance. Instead, they were sent away and placed into a setting where a general lack of goodness propelled Anastasia towards becoming the worst version of herself. With the decree now allowing her into Auradon, Lydia is coming with the intention of absolutely wrecking the lives of the Charmings in any way that she can as vengeance for how her life was destroyed.

Lydia wasn’t really raised by her mother. Instead she was tolerated. She never had a parent stepping in to tell her to chill out or to instill in her the rules of polite society. She learned what she could from mirror observances, but she still doesn’t know a ton. It’s going to make for an interesting season, especially when she wants to ingratiate herself to some of the upper echelons of society in order to be able to more easily complete her nefarious work.

At 25 years old she’s been told that she’s rapidly approaching spinster age, but she doesn’t care. She’s not interested in the marriage mart.

Lydia is absolutely ride or die for her cousin and anyone she truly cares about (Cosette and Andres). She would have no hesitation in spreading a nasty rumor about anyone who hurt them... or having an arrow from an unseen source fly through the air, only to conveniently just miss them (archery is her outlet for rage).
