Fox News is hosting the GOP debate in Wisconsin. During this build up segment, Martha MacCallum introduces the “random Republican voters” in Wisconsin who will watch the debate. Except, well… there’s a little problem. MacCallum introduces Chris Lawrence as a “Wisconsin GOP voter” who seemingly supports Ron DeSantis. However, MacCallum fails to mention that Chris Lawrence actually works for the Koch Network, who have recently pledged to spend $70 million to defeat President Trump.

Aides to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have led a purge of the state’s top law enforcement agency after pushback over an attempt to block a lawsuit seeking the release of records related to the Governor’s taxpayer-funded travel and security detail. Officials with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) clashed with the Governor’s office, arguing there were legal grounds to hand over at least some of the records. The Governor’s staff, known for having little toleration for disagreement, responded by removing the FDLE dissenters. At the heart of the dispute between Governor DeSantis‘s office and the FDLE is a new Florida law which shields the governor’s travel records from the public, including the media. The law was part of a package of bills passed by the Florida legislature this past spring, which DeSantis used to increase his power while shielding himself from public scrutiny. Top staff at the FDLE argued the disclosure law did not prevent them from handing over basic cost records in compliance with public requests. Aides for DeSantis responded to the FDLE’s position by blocking the promotion of at least one dissenting attorney in the agency, as well as pushing out the FDLE’s deputy chief of staff Patricia Carpenter and chief of staff Shane Desguin. Despite the Governor’s position arguing the law essentially shields almost all details about his travel and security detail from the public, the Republican sponsor of the statute says this was not his intent. State Rep. Jeff Holcomb says the law was simply intended to prevent individuals from constructing a ‘security profile’ of the Florida Governor using sensitive travel and security information. Preventing the public from obtaining basic information such as the taxpayer cost of the Governor’s security detail was not the end goal.
In the spring of 2023, Ron and Casey DeSantis visited Tucker Carlson’s Florida home for a lunch that was supposed entice the then Fox News host towards favorable coverage of the Florida governor’s soon-to-be-announced presidential campaign. It culminated, allegedly, with Gov. DeSantis instead kicking one of the Carlson family’s dogs, at least according to a new book from Michael Wolff.
According to Wolff, the lunch came about at the prompting of billionaire Rupert Murdoch, who wanted Fox’s on-air personalities to meet with Ron and Casey. Murdoch hoped they would warm to the governor as an alternative to former President Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Wolff writes: “For two hours Ron DeSantis sat at her table talking in an outdoor voice indoors, failing to observe any basics of conversation ritual or propriety, reeling off an unselfconscious list of his programs and initiatives and political accomplishments.” This hyper-ambitious bravado evidently alienated the Tucker’s wife Susie Carlson.
Matters were made worse when Gov. DeSantis allegedly pushed one of of the Carlson’s spaniels under the table with his foot – resulting in Susie Carlson concluding that DeSantis had in fact kicked one of the family dogs.
While Carlson himself has apparently told reporters the story is “absurd” and “made up”, there is of course the chance he’s just being a gracious host. The National Pulse checked with other sources with knowledge of the lunch, who said there is little reason to doubt Wolff’s characterisation of what happened. DeSantis’s odd personal behavior is well documented – including accusations that he eats pudding with his fingers, doesn’t respond well to jokes at his expense, and often alienates his own staff.
The DeSantis campaign responded to Wolff’s recollection of the lunch with the Carlsons stating: “The totality of that story is absurd and false. Some will say or write anything to attack Ron DeSantis because they know he presents a threat to their worldview.”
Did Ron DeSantis kick Tucker Carlson’s dog?. It’s unclear if we’ll ever know for sure, but it’s hardly outside the scope weird behavior we’ve already witnessed from the Florida Governor.
