Already missing the Polynesian ...
such an adorable woman!
Kau'i Brandt, better known as Auntie Kau'i, can be found in the first-floor lobby of the Great Ceremonial House. At age 81, Auntie Kau'i is a Disney Legend, having been with the Polynesian Resort almost since it opened.
She moved from the Hawaiian island of Oahu in 1971 to first open the Polynesian show at Disneyland and then a similar show at Walt Disney World. She was the Master of Ceremonies during the shows and has served as a cultural representative at the resort since its beginning.
Auntie Kau'i is responsible for creating the authentic leis from real flowers that are given to couples celebrating honeymoons or anniversaries. During lunch time, Auntie Kau'i can be found serving Hawaiian cookies to guests in the Polynesian lobby. On top of all of this, she also teaches occasional hula dancing lessons in the Great Ceremonial House.
A quick illustration of a new poolside restaurant for the Poly! Would be a part of the pool expansion I mentioned in my previous post. Excuse the crude drawing.. I don't have much experience illustrating ideas by hand! Working on it though!
Okay, so I totally love the Polynesian Resort.. it's hard to describe why. Maybe it's the history, the theme, the memories, the location, the general positive vibe that it radiates - maybe all these. I don't know. I just love it.
It was recently announced that the resort will be renovated over the next year. I thought to myself, "Well then, here's my chance to be creative and think about all the ways I would improve the resort!" What started out as a quick sketch on printer paper eventually turned into a new site plan for the entire resort (will post the site plan soon). I got carried away.. but I couldn't help it.. it's just too much fun!
This rough illustration is a concept I created of a new mountain/volcano structure to be built where the existing quiet pool is. The new complex includes an inclosed body slide, a grotto jacuzzi tucked within the mountain behind the waterfall, a lazy river (not pictured), and a large freeform swimming pool with a 1' deep deck area (also not pictured).

And here is a photo of the pool complex at Aulani. This resort's mountain structure houses two slides and is a source of inspiration for this redesign.
Some existing longhouses are to be removed to make room for this new pool complex. When I post the completed site plan, the layout will make a bit more sense.
