So here's what irks me when people talk about The Little Mermaid. Everybody always says that it's so sexist or whatever because it depicts a girl leaving her life and family and freedom behind for a guy she doesn't even know, but they entirely miss the point. Yes it's dumb that Ariel completely loses he mind over someone she hasn't ever spoken to, but that's because she's 16, she's not an adult and so she doesn't really make sound decisions. And while people are complaining about the love story part of the movie, they completely miss this whole song where an embittered sea witch talks about sexism and how the only way to get the guy is to shut up and look pretty. As a kid it never occurred to me that it would be okay to run away from home and get married when I was sixteen, but I did stop and think about the fact that the villain thought that "ladies aren't to say a word." Clearly if somebody who wanted to enslave people and rule the ocean thought I should keep my mouth shut and not "underestimate the importance of body language," then I should do the opposite. While the entertainment comes from the main protagonists, there's way more to be learned from the villain in this movie.
