Writing a Dissertation or Thesis
The dissertation or thesis is intended to produce an original piece of research work on a specific topic.A dissertation is typically the most substantial piece of independent work in an undergraduate program, whereas a thesis is typically associated with master's degrees, though these terms can be interchangeable and may differ between countries and universities.
Writing a dissertation necessitates a variety of planning and research abilities that will be extremely useful in your future career and within organizations. The dissertation topic and question should be narrow enough that you can collect all of the necessary data in a relatively short period of time, usually six weeks for undergraduate programs. You should also choose a topic about which you are already familiar so that you have a frame of reference for your literature search as well as some understanding and interest in the theory behind your topic.
Writing Style
Dissertations and academic articles were always written in the third person and in the passive voice; for example, 'An experiment was conducted to test...'
Check with your university about their requirements before you start to write.
If you can't find any guidelines, ask your supervisor and/or the person who will be grading your thesis what they prefer. Ensure that the tone of voice and the persona remain consistent throughout.
Whatever style you prefer, keep your language simple and free of jargon. When possible, use shorter, simpler words and phrases. Short sentences are preferable because they are easier to understand. Any sentence that is longer than three lines must be cut or split.
Editing of Language
English is the international academic publishing language, and many universities require their students to publish their dissertations in English. If English is not your first language, this will be a problem because your English will almost certainly be inadequate.
You must ensure that you allow enough time for someone else to read over your work. Nobody, even if you pay them, will want to stay up all night editing your work because you left it too late. Many people would also prefer not to work on weekends. Professional language editing should take at least two weeks.
