Todays incidents in Mumbai are shocking- This is not way to start the new year in Maximum city. It takes us back to the 80s and 90s. 1.The caste system & discrimination have NO PLACE IN THE 21ST CENTURY!!! 2.I had really hoped that bandhs were no longer part of Mumbai as an international city divisive caste politics 3. Unfortunately in India every incident gets politicized 4.While it is so convenient to blame so called right wing elements this is not the point right now - saying that a religion is being forced upon us is ridiculous? 5.Sounds instigated and motivated to me 6.While the police must work to control unlawful elements from wreaking damage to infrastructure & public property there has to be sensitivity towards the unemployed and frustrated youth who feel helpless. Their demonstrations, reactions, unrest have to be addressed? 7. There has been a lot of destruction so lets not rule out people outside who don't wish to allow this country to progress? -I fear that the events may not have even been spontaneous and they may be motivated- on 1st Jan motivated elements may have instigated rumors - could it be people using divisive politics- people who don’t want this country to progress? 8. I appeal to my Mumbai to not allow this divide and rule to fragment our country as it has done in the past. In a country like ours we must be careful not react so violently! Shutting down Mumbai serves no purpose 9. Internationally when something wrong is done or happens -the affected or victims expect the police to investigate and bring the wrongdoers to book #mumbai #debate #live #bandh #politics #divisivepolitics

Julie Winokur guest blogs on America Speaks. Read what she has to say:
"Democracy is founded on robust dialogue, but somewhere along the line, politics replaced sex as the one thing in America we don’t discuss in mixed company even amongst friends and family. Increasingly, political pundits dictate the tenor of our national conversation and we have allowed divisive catch phrases to supplant genuine dialogue. One filmmaker–a mother of two teenagers– is traveling across the United States with a star-spangled table asking people to sit down with her and share their political beliefs."
