Hey. I'm trying to plan some DIY projects I can do for my room which I'm redoing (it's literally all white and I have this wallpaper that's got black, grey and dark purple stripes.) Trying to find a good cheap way to make a Historical (German/Victorian London) type clock and I'm not having much luck. ;_; Can I get some advice?
I’m happy to help if I can! Can you give me more of an idea of what you have in mind? A tabletop clock, a wall clock? What size? Do you have any images similar to what you’re thinking of?
I can start with the general advice that I find makes a great starting point for almost any project: if you have any thrift stores or secondhand shops nearby, scour those for clocks, old wooden boxes, anything that seems like it might make a decent clock part. Estate sales are another good place to look. You might get lucky and find just what you’re looking for, no DIY needed. More likely, you’ll find bits and pieces that you can put together in a way that looks good.
Check out craft stores and home improvement stores for wooden bits and bobs that can turn something plain into something ornate. Use nails and screws to hold things together rather than glue when you can.
Any kind of ornate piece is going to be harder to make from scratch than something simple, which is why I recommend looking for things that are already in a shape you can use. Sand and refinish things to make different pieces match, or paint over them.
I hope this is helpful, and I wish you luck! Any advice from my followers?
