I can't remember where I first read about this concept, but it's stuck with me. It's a powerful tool to have two characters talking about one thing but thinking/feeling something extremely different. The dissonance creates tension and intrigues the reader (hopefully!) When you read the scene in Starlight Nights where Calista learns Eric has a dog, they're talking about the dog but there is so much more going on that's unspoken in that scene! At least that was my intent. 😊 Similarly, when one character asks a question of another, consider having the responding character NOT answer. Have them change the subject or ask a question in return or take action instead (walk out or punch someone.) Love this. Jerome Stern's Making Shapely Fiction was my very first craft book, from my short story writing class in college. And this is true. It can be overdone, obviously, as with anything. But studies have shown that humans communicate an enormous amount non-verbally. So sometimes I have to stop and make myself think: what exactly am I trying to communicate? Compare: "I can't do that," he said nervously. "I can't do that." He tore his napkin up into tiny, wispy shreds.
