DJ Hedspin is a Turntablist, DJ & Producer from Canada, with roots in the Philippines. He is part of Canada’s premier DJ crew “EH! Team DJs” and the Winner of the prestigious Red Bull Thre3Style World Championship in 2011. Music-wise he is best known for his track”Mobbin” (with Grandtheft) which he released on Diplo’s record label Mad Decent. He will perform live in Bangkok at Insanity Nightclub.

DJ Hedspin: Spin City

DJ Hedley Tuscano, aka DJ Hedspin is a hard guy track down. Recently wrapping up his Asia tour, he’s been busy showcasing his skills in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. It’s a busy time for this 2011 Redbull Thre3style Champion, but that’s what happens when you win a global DJ battle—the world needs you to get the party started.

“My first club gig was at a venue called Madisons…My friend was DJing…and said he had to use the washroom in the middle of his set and asked me to takeover. He came back from the washroom 2 hours later and I managed to still have people on the dance floor.”

A DJ name is one’s on-stage identity. Yours happens to be Hedspin. What’s the story behind choosing that alias? My real name is Hedley, and I spin records for a living. Nuff said.

When did you start DJing? Tell us about your first gig. I started buying records in 1989. My first club gig was at a venue called Madisons in my hometown of Vancouver, BC, Canada. My friend was DJing at his weekly club night at the time and said he had to use the washroom in the middle of his set and asked me to takeover. He came back from the washroom 2 hours later and I managed to still have people on the dance floor.

What are the some of the cool things you are discovering as a DJ? I learned that a good DJ is a good DJ no matter where in the world you may be. I discovered that I actually have morals! When DJing a few spring break parties in Cuba, The Dominican Republic, and Mexico, I actually felt weird about playing songs about sex, drugs, and drinking, and even played the clean radio versions of certain songs by choice. These parties also made me scared to have a daughter. [Laughs]

Redbull Thre3Style was a big victory. How did you celebrate? There was an afterparty that we all went to where DJs Z-trip, Numark, Cosmo Baker, Skratch Bastid & The Gaff played all 7″ records til 7 in the morning. The Redbull Thre3Style finals was a week long, and I was exhausted mentally, physically, and emotionally. After it was all over, I ended up getting really sick and was stuck in my bed for two days straight. I wouldn’t change a thing about how it went down.

How did life change for you after you won that contest? Having the title of “World Redbull Thre3Style Champion” attached to my name has forced me to work harder than I ever have my whole life. Every gig I have from now on, people will always have high expectations, and I feel that I have to keep working to exceed them. I’m also not at home as much.

What’s your go-to drink before you start your set, must-have during, and necessity after? It all depends on the market and whether or not I have an early flight the next day. If it’s a new city, I’ll drink water before, and during my set, I’ll just sip on vodka sodas. I usually save all the shots, whiskey, vodka tequila, and Redbulls ’til after my set.

If it’s a city or club I’m comfortable with, then it’s anything goes—in moderation and in a professional manner, of course.

I know DJs don’t like to take requests, but if a girl asked for _____________, you’d play it and ask her out. If a girl asks for any song—it doesn’t matter what it is—I say, “Maybe,” then go home to my wife after.

Teach the next generation how to spot great artists. What are your tips on spotting great music? Be open-minded, embrace, research, listen, and read about all types of music—internet, magazines, books etc—and check out all different types of live shows even if you don’t know who the artist may be. I also use Shazam a lot on my phone to discover a lot of stuff.

What music trend did you swear never to follow? K-Pop / J-Pop / Canto-Pop

What is the number one mistake rookie DJs make and how do they avoid it? Number one mistake would be calling yourself a DJ because you have a laptop, DJ equipment, and a bunch of mp3s. To be better, know and learn about the foundation of all different types of music, learn how to read crowds, and practice your skills as much as you can. Try not to sound like everyone else.

It starts off as a hobby until it becomes your career. What do your parents say about you being a DJ? Stuff my mom says: Don’t eat too much on the road or you’ll get fat, don’t do drugs, wear earplugs or you’ll go deaf, say hi to your brother when you DJ in Toronto, and watch out for pick pocketers in Asia.
