What We’re Listening To: Dilla Day
#NowPlaying: "PREMIERE | Match Box - Marine Iquana (DJ Merlín Remix) [Kraft Records]" by 432Hz Social Club
No joke
Merlin on the 1s & 2s I was thinking of what would be good to listen to off my iPod on the way to the service and felt like Donuts would be the perfect soundtrack for this drive. Merlin had that ability, much like Dilla, to bring the language of the Spirit through the decks, and Donuts is that album for me that continues to reveal hidden mysteries to me. So, as I pull out of my driveway to start the journey, the first car I find in front of me has a license plate that reads "JSTBKIND" and I start hearing "Waves" as it's playing as I'm reading this and in the way Dilla chopped the sample of 10cc's "Johnny Don't Do It" was sounding a lot like "Beeeeee Kiiiiiiiiind" in this moment. I felt like that was the perfect message for the day. Jason, or Uncle Merlin as he was known to many, always treated everyone like they were his own family, often going out of his way to make sure that the people around him were all doing well and following their passions. As I arrived at the church, "Don't Cry" started playing and I thought to myself, "of course it would be like this" like a confirmation that this was the message I needed to hear as processing the emotions of this unexpected farewell. Jason spent his life raising up all who were around him, he made us all strive to be greater versions of ourselves, and seeing everyone who came together to share their memories of him is a true testament to who he is and what he's done in cultivating a strong culture of caring in the community. We will all feel this loss in many ways, but I'm able to find encouragement in the power of his influence that resonates in all of us as we carry the torch forward that he has left us. May your spirit continue to live and shine through all of us as you walk on.
