DJ RAW (6BLOCC) Live at Jungle - October 2016
This is a 90-minute audio recording of R.A.W. (6BLOCC) playing live at Jungle, near Downtown Los Angeles, October 7, 2016. This portion of the set began at 12:20 AM the following morning.
When jungle first debuted on the west coast, I considered it to be the music of the underground's underground. "Junglists" had grown weary of the 4-on-the-floor beat ubiquitous in most types of rave music. Inevitably, these rave veterans graduated to a new sound and found refuge in jungle's frantically syncopated rhythms. Promoters of the day respected the emerging genre and designated secondary areas at their events exclusively for jungle music.
In the early 90's, cultural cross-pollination between the UK and the US was fluid, as if Atlantic Ocean posed no barrier to the free exchange of dance music and rave culture. While the first Jungles records were undoubtedly played at London clubs, it wasn't long before jungle records started showing up in LA record shops. One of the first Los Angeles DJs to embrace the new jungle sound was DJ R.A.W. He went on to become the city's preeminent ambassador of the genre.
Jungle borrowed heavily from reggae, ragga and Jamaican dance hall – styles that resonated with urban youth in the UK. Kids living in San Francisco and Los Angeles likewise embraced those styles, but perhaps for slightly different reasons. Reggae music was associated with the American counter-culture, especially during the 1980's. Listening to Bob Marley in smoky dorm rooms was a rite of passage for thousands of college kids. Reggae was commonly played in Dead show parking lots and later in secondary rooms at raves. When 90's club kids heard reggae riffs and lyrics remixed into jungle tracks, they felt an instant familiarity.
Inevitably, American producers began to infuse their own regional flavors into the music, which brings me to the story if this recording...
