Grammar

541. ないではすまない (nai dewa sumanai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(negative)] [de wa- compound particle] [sumanai(negative)- verb] Note: Like expression 540, there is a -zu negative equivalent.

Meaning: “must VERB PHRASE” Note: A more literal translation would be something like “not VERB PHRASE-ing is inexcusable.”

Example: “Minna-san, watashi-tachi wa mainichi keeki wo tabenai de wa sumanai.” “Everyone, we must eat cake every day.”

542. ないまでも (nai made mo):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(negative)] [made- post-position] [mo- secondary particle]

Meaning: “Even if VERB PHRASE” Note: The verb phrase is negative, meaning that it will read “even if X is not done.”

Example: “Keeki wo tabete inai made mo keeki ga hoshii.” “Even if I am not eating cake, I want cake.”

543. ないものか (nai mono ka):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(potential, negative)] [mono- noun] [ka- interrogative particle]

Meaning: “Can’t I VERB PHRASE?”

Example: “Anta no biiru wo nomenai mono ka.” “Can’t I drink your beer?”

544. ないものでもない (nai mono de mo nai): 

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(negative)] [mono- noun] [de- gerund verb] [mo- secondary particle] [nai(negative)- copula/verb]

Meaning: “VERB PHRASE is not impossible.”

Example: “Ano onna ga suki da kara, boku ga doki doki ja nai mono de mo nai.” “Because I like that girl, it is not impossible that I am nervous.”

545. ないとも限らない (nai to mo kagiranai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(negative)] [to- quotative] [mo- secondary particle] [kagiranai(negative)- verb]

Meaning: “it is a possibility that VERB PHRASE” Note: One can just translate this as “might VERB PHRASE.”

Example: “Kono shokushuukan de boku wa futoranai to mo kagiranai.” “With these eating habits, I might get fat.”

546. なくして (nakushite):

Parsing:[Noun Phrase] [nakushite- gerund verb] Note: Think of this expression functioning adverbially.

Meaning: “without NOUN PHRASE” or “not having NOUN PHRASE”

Example: “Fooku nakushite keeki wo taberareru.” “One can eat cake without a fork.”

547. 何しろ (nani shiro):

Parsing: [nani shiro- conjunctival expression] [Inflexional Phrase]

Meaning: “In any case, INFLEXIONAL PHRASE” or “As you know, INFLEXIONAL PHRASE.”

Example: “Nani shiro, boku no seikatsu wa tsumaranai.” “In any case, my life is boring.”

548. なしには (nashi ni wa):

Parsing: [Noun Phrase] [nashi- suffix] [ni- dative particle] [wa- topical particle]

Meaning: “without NOUN PHRASE”

Example: “Tou nashi ni wa Kenshin-san ga saya de tatakatta.” “Without a sword, Kenshin fought with his sheathe.”

549. ならでは (nara dewa):

621. ても始まらない (te mo hajimaranai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(gerund)]] [mo- secondary particle] [hajimaranai(negative)- verb]

Meaning: “It’s no use VERB PHRASE-ing”

Example: “Tabako wo yamete mo hajimaranai desu.” “It’s no use quitting smoking.”

622. ても差し支えない (temo sashitsukaenai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(gerund)]] [mo- secondary particle] [sashitsukaenai(negative)- verb] Note: If you want to use a noun phrase, add the gerund of “da,” “de,” to the end to make it a verb phrase.

Meaning: “It’s okay if VERB PHRASE” or “there are no objections to VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Koko de tabako wo sutte mo sashitsukaenai.” “It’s okay if you smoke here.”

623. てしかるべきだ (te shikaru beki da):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(gerund)]] [shikaru beki- auxiliary verb] [da- copula/verb] Note: “shikaru,” to my knowledge, is not commonly seen by itself without “beki.” It seems to be a secondary particle. “beki” we’ve spoken of before, which is an archaic auxiliary verb that is still in use.

Meaning: “one should VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Kono kurusi ni tsuite isha to shabete shikaru beki da.”  “You should talk with your doctor about this medicine.”

624. ってば (tteba):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(imperative)]] [tteba- ending particle]

Meaning: “VERB PHRASE!” or “I told you to VERB PHRASE” Note: This expression is a kind of imperative used when you’re fed up with someone, or it can just express something emotionally. In the later case, the verb phrase’s verb won’t be conjugated as some imperative.

Example: “Ninjin wo tabenasai tteba.” “I told you to eat your carrot.”

625. てやまない (te yamanai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(gerund)]] [yamanai(negative)- verb]

Meaning: “to always VERB PHRASE” or “to never stop VERB PHRASE-ing”

Example: “Boku wa keeki wo tabete yamanai.” “I am always eating cake.”

626. と相まって (to aimatte):

Parsing: [Noun Phrase] [to- conjunction] [aimatte(gerund)- verb]

Meaning: “with NOUN PHRASE” or “because of NOUN PHRASE” Note: The “with” meaning is actually more literal, but it is used in the sense of “with X, Y occurs.”

Example: “Atarashii daitouryou to aimatte muchitsujo wo kita.” “With the new president came the chaos.”

627. とあれば (to areba):

Parsing: {[Verb Phrase] or [Noun Phrase]} [quotative particle] [areba(-eba conditional)- verb]

Meaning: “If it’s the case that NOUN/VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Keeki ga hoshii to areba, boku ga keeki wo taberu.” “If it’s the case that I want cake, I will eat cake.”

628. とあって (to atte):

Parsing: {[Verb Phrase] or [Noun Phrase]} [quotative particle] [atte(gerund)- verb]

Meaning: “because of NOUN/VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Shigoto to atte, amari yasumanai.” “Because of my job, I hardly sleep.”

629. とばかりに (to bakari ni):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase] [to- quotative] [bakari- secondary particle] [ni- dative particle]

Meaning: “as if (to say) VERB PHRASE” “as though VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Kanojo wa suki da to bakari ni boku wo jitto mita.” “She stared at me as if to say I like you.”

630. といえども (to iedomo):

Parsing: {[Verb Phrase] or [Noun Phrase]} [to- quotative particle] [iedomo- secondary particle] Note: We’re calling “iedomo” a secondary particle here just for syntactic purposes. The truth is that I haven’t settled on what “bakari,” “iedomo,” and a few other suffix-like things are exactly.

Meaning: “even NOUN/VERB PHRASE” or “even if NOUN/VERB PHRASE”

Example: “O-kane-mochi to iedomo, koko ni sunde iru.” “Even if I had lots of money, I would live here.”

Note: One can also use the indicative imperfective in the initial Verb Phrase.

Meaning: “Even if one (wants/tries to) VERB PHRASE, it cannot be done.”

Example: “Keeki wo boku ga mainichi tabeyou ni mo taberarenai.” “Even if I try to eat cake everyday, it cannot be one.”

672. ようによっては (you ni yotte wa):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(stem)]] [you- dependent noun] [ni- dative particle] [yotte(gerund)- verb] [wa- topical particle] 

Meaning: “depending on (how) VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Tou wo tsukai you ni yotte wa tabun anata wa ou-jo-sama wo kyuujo dekiru.” “Depending on how you use the sword, perhaps you can rescue the princess.”

673. ゆえに (yue ni):

Parsing: {[Verb Phrase] or [Noun Phrase]} {optional [ga- nominative particle]} [ni- dative particle]  Note: One can make a Noun Phrase a Verb Phrase by adding “de aru.”

Meaning: “due to (the fact that) NOUN/VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Mainichi keeki wo tabeta yue ni kare wa hayaji shimashita.” “Due to him eating cake every day, he died young.”

674. ざる (zaru):

Parsing: [Verb[negative, imperfective)] -nai + zaru. E.g. “hanasanai” —> “hanasazaru”

Meaning: “not VERB” or “un-VERB” Note: This expression is used mostly, it seems to me, as an attributive.

Example: “Nomanazaru to wa o-shikko suru no desu.” “Un-drinking is to pee.” (This is me being stupid, ignore this sentence if you must.)

675. ずじまい (zu jimai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(-zu negative)]] [jimai- substantivizing suffix] Note: If you want to say “to never VERB PHRASE,” i.e. to use this as the verb, then you’ll need a copula, either “da” or “de aru.”

Meaning: “never VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Boku wa tabetakunai keeki wo mizu jimai datta.” “I never saw a cake I didn’t want to eat.”

676. ずくめ (zukume):

Parsing: [Noun Phrase] [zukume- suffix] Note: If you want to use a Verb Phrase, add “koto” to the end.

Meaning: “entirely/completely NOUN PHRASE” Note: This expression is often used for colors, in which case it can be phrased as “completely in COLOR”

Example: “Kuro-zukume no onna wa gossu no hito desu.” “The woman completely in black is goth.”

677. ずとも (zu tomo):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(-zu negative)]] [tomo- suffix] 

Meaning: “even without VERB PHRASE-ing”

Grammar

661. つ～つ (tsu~tsu): 

Parsing: [Verb Phrase 1 [Verb(stem)] [tsu- suffix] [Verb Phrase 2 [Verb(stem)] [tsu- suffix] Note: My understanding is that this expression is very rare, and that it is used mainly in idiomatic expressions. Also, the entire thing seems, at least to me, to be syntactically a noun, and that noun takes “suru” to become a verb.

Meaning: “VERB PHRASE 1-ing and VERB PHRASE 2-ing” Note: Both actions described in the verb phrases will be contrasting.

Example: “Shinpai suru kara, boku wa iki-tsu modori-tsu shita.” “Because I am nervous, I went and returned (paced back and forth.)

662. はおろか (wa oro ka):

Parsing: [Noun Phrase] [wa- topical particle] [oro- noun] [ka- conjunction] Note: Don’t hold me to “ka” being a conjunction just yet.

Meaning: “let alone NOUN PHRASE” or “not to mention NOUN PHRASE”

Example: “Tsuma wa oro ka tomodachi ga inai.” “I don’t have a friend, let alone a wife.”

663. はさておき (wa sateoki):

Parsing: [Noun Phrase] [wa- topical particle] [sateoki(participle)- verb]

Meaning: “setting aside NOUN PHRASE” or “besides NOUN PHRASE”

Example: “Keeki wa sateoki nani wo taberu no ga suki desu ka?” “Besides cake, what do you like to eat?”

664. や否や (ya ina ya):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(imperfective)]] [ya- conjunction] [ina- noun] [ya- conjunction] Note: Don’t hold me to this “ya,” at least the first one, being a conjunction. It might be a variation on the topical particle.

Meaning: “As soon as VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Boku wa shinu ya ina ya Kami-sama wo mita.” “As soon as I died, I saw God.”

665. やしない (ya shinai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(stem)]] [ya- topical particle] [shinai(negative)- verb] Note: This “ya” is a variation on “wa.” 

Meaning: “to NOT VERB PHRASE” Note: This is an emphatic negative.

Example: “Watashi wa kare wo koroshi ya shinai.” “I did not murder him.”

667. (よ)うが/(よ)うと (you ga/you to):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(volitonal)]] {[ga- conjunction] or [to- conjunction]} Note: The volitional of the copula in this expression “darou,” and the volitional of an adjectival verb is “-karou.”

Meaning: “Even if VERB PHRASE” or “No matter VERB PHRASE”

Example: “dare ga nan to iou to boku wa keeki wo taberu.” “No matter what people say, I will eat cake.”

668. (よ)うが～まいが/(よ)うと～まいと (you ga~mai ga/you to~mai to):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(volitonal)]] [ga- conjunction] [Verb(indicative)] [mai- suffix]  {[ga- conjunction] or [to- conjunction]}

Note: “mai” is what some would call an auxiliary verb, a bit like “beki,” but for our purposes we can see it as a suffix since auxiliaries are sort of odd in Japanese.

Meaning: “regardless of whether or not VERB PHRASE” or “VERB PHRASE or not”

Example: “Kimi ni ki ni irou ga iru mai ga, kore wo tabenasai.” “Regardless of whether you like it or not, eat this.”

669. (よ)うか～まいか (you ka~mai ka):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(volitonal)]] [ka- conjunction] [Verb(indicative)] [mai- suffix] [ka- conjunction]

Meaning: “whether or not to VERB PHRASE”

We’ve been crunching numbers recently, and we’ve come to the conclusion that our video project in no longer viable in the timeframe we set up.

The reason for this is not because we cannot make the videos, but because we do not have an adequate Internet upload speed. Long story short, the Internet we have here has an upload speed of 1.5 megabytes per second, due to the fact that the household allocates most of its uploading power into a large amount of security cameras.

With that speed, it would take us something like 3 months to upload all our videos non-stop. Further, we cannot stream anything here because we have insufficient speed. 

The most viable option for us to purchase a new Internet connect and not have to depend on the one we’re using now.

Thus we are starting a campaign for new Internet Connection.

We are encouraging you all to join our Patron program, which you can join through Patreon and also through monthly installments on Paypal. 

We will be in the next few hours providing links to everything you are missing out on by not being a part of our Patron program. These are things not accessible to the general public. 

Our goal is to reach $120 in pledges.

Grammar

451. やら～やら (yara~yara):

Parsing: {[Verb Phrase] or [Noun Phrase]} [yara- substantivizing suffix] Note: One will tend to use the expression more than once. If used once, it conveys an uncertainty. 

Meaning: “such things like/as NOUN/VERB PHRASE” Note: This is just a form of creating a list.

Example: “Boku wa mainichi keeki yara oreo yara wo taberu.” “I eat things like cake and oreos everyday.” 

452. よりほかない (yori hoka nai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(imperfective)]] {optional [yori- post-position]} [hoka- noun] [nai(negative)- copula/verb]

Meaning: “to have no choice but to VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Kono resutoran wa beeru ga nai kara mizu wo nomu yori hoka nai.” “Because this restaurant does not have beer, I have no choice but to drink water.”

453. ようでは (you de wa): 

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(imperfective)]] [you- noun] [de- gerund verb] [wa- topical particle]

Meaning: “If VERB PHRASE” Note: Whatever follows this topical phrase, it has to be something negative. That’s how the expression works.

Example: “Mainichi keeki wo taberu you de wa toukyoubyou wo hasshou suru.” “If one eats cake everyday, one will develop diabetes.”

454. ようがない/ようもない (you ga nai/you mo nai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(stem)]] [you- verbal suffix] {[ga- nominative particle] or [mo- secondary particle]} [nai(negative)- copula/verb]

Meaning: “It is impossible to VERB PHRASE.”

Example: “Boku wa sono uta o shinazu ni utai-you ga nai.” “It is impossible for me to sing that song without dying.”

455. 要するに (you suru ni): 

Parsing: [you suru- verb] [ni- dative particle] [Inflexional Phrase] Note: I’m not entirely sure if this is a dative particle. I really don’t like there being a dative particle and an adverbial suffix. I’m starting to believe they can be reconciled; but for now let’s call it a dative particle.

Meaning: “The point is, INFLEXIONAL PHRASE.”

Example: “You suru ni kodomo wa akuma da.” “The point is, children are demons.”

456. ざるを得ない (zaru wo enai):

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(negative stem (w/o -nai)] [zaru- archaic verbal suffix] [wo- accusative particle] [enai(negative)- verb] Note: This is one of those older expressions that still lives on even though it doesn’t really match well with modern Japanese grammar.

Meaning: “one can’t help VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Watashi wa kimi to koi wo ochirazaru wo enai.” “I can’t help falling in love with you.”

457. ずに済む (zu ni sumu): 

Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(-zu negative)]] [ni- dative particle] [sumu- verb]

Meaning: “to get by without VERB PHRASE”

Example: “Angai kanojo wa toiretto-peepaa wo kawazu ni sumu.” “Surprisingly, she gets by without buying toilet paper.”

458. あえて (aete):

Parsing: [aete- adverb] [Verb Phrase]

Meaning: “to VERB PHRASE deliberately” Note: The implication with “aete” is that it is a rather bold act, that’s why it will sometimes be translated as “to dare to...”

Example: “Kanojo wa boku no chiizu ni aete fureta.” “She deliberately touched my cheese.”

459. あくまでも (akumade mo):

Parsing: [akumade- adverb] [mo- secondary particle] [Verb Phrase} Note: Consider this expression adverbial.

Meaning: “the most VERB PHRASE” or “definitely VERB PHRASE” or “to the end VERB PHRASE” Note: This expression is used as a superlative, and in that vein it is more like “of all time” than “the most.” Just keep in mind when using superlatives that it is not superlative in the “#1 out of X” kind of way. It’s more like when you tell someone “You’re the best!”

Example: “Hotaru no Haka wa akumade mo kanashii eiga da to omou.” “I think ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ is the saddest film.”

460. 案の定 (an no jou): 

Parsing: [an- noun] [no- attributive copula] [jou- noun] [Inflexional Phrase] Note: This expression is adverbial.

Meaning: “Sure enough, INFLEXIONAL PHRASE” or “Just as one thought, INFLEXIONAL PHRASE”
