Santa Isn’t Real {DK Fanfic}
Word Count: 2397
Genre: Christmas, oneshot, :DK, fluff
Lee Seokmin was probably the only thing that was pulling you through the toughest month of your life. School was getting harder, your grades were dropping, and your part-time job just wasn’t being nice to you at all. On top of that your siblings were acting as entitled brats as usual and your parents weren’t exactly helping by taking their side. With all the darkness in your life, it was nice to see your childhood friend (and long time crush) peer at you through the window of a café.
“Have you been well?” Seokmin asked, taking the seat across from you. His eyes widened slightly as he took in the amount of paperwork—essays, outlines, projects, among other things that was not school related but work related.
“Um…yeah, sort of,” you said, setting your glasses to the side and running a hand down your face. You picked up your phone and carefully examined your appearance, letting out a groan and placing your head down, “Gosh, I look like a mess. You probably think I’m disgusting right now, don’t you?”
Seokmin laughed, patting your head gently, “No, you look absolutely fine!”
“You’re just saying that because I’m so miserable,” you mumbled, head still down, “I don’t need your pity.”
Seokmin’s grin only grew, “Now why would I need to lie? You always look like a princess.”
“What princesses do you know?” you asked, lifting your head up slightly to look at Seokmin.
Seokmin shrugged, “Only you.”
A subtle heat climbed your cheeks and you quickly looked back down at your book. While you were in the middle of hoping he hadn’t noticed, Seokmin giggled. You glanced up and asked him what he was laughing at.
“Nothing,” Seokmin shrugged, leaning forward onto the table, hands fiddling with the edges of your papers as he read through them. After a moment, his voice brought your attention back up to his handsome face, “You have to finish all of this?”
You nodded.
“By when?”
“Um…next week I think?” you sighed, glancing over to your laptop, “I should be able to finish it all before then if I cram.”
“Cramming is bad though. You’ll have a hard time retaining information,” Seokmin frowned.
“I don’t want to retain this information,” you rolled your eyes, “This is all…useless junk. When am I ever actually going to use this?”
“Your future job?”
You shook your head, “I’m not going to work. I’ve decided that I’m not cut for work. I’ll just marry a rich man and be a trophy wife.”
Seokmin’s grin widened and you could practically feel a cheesy response working in his brain. You were not disappointed. “Well, then maybe I should get rich fast if I want to marry you.”
The rosy tint that had just started to disappear surfaced again as you threw a wadded up sticky-note at the laughing Sekomin, “Yah! Who said I was going to marry you? We’re not even dating.”
Seokmin smiled, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were?”
“As if,” you bluffed, feeling extremely flustered as you turned back to your assignments. “How could you flirt with me right now anyway? I look so gross.”
“I already said you look fine.”
You rolled your eyes, avoiding Seokmin’s gaze with whatever there was to distract you. Seokmin watched you in amusement until finally he placed an envelope before you. You looked up at him, “What’s this?”
“Nothing, just an envelope.”
“Then…why did you hand it to me?” you asked.
Seokmin leaned forward, an excited grin gracing his face, “So you can send a letter to Santa Clause.”
The fluffy, cutesy, and overall romantic background music that had been playing through your head throughout this entire encounter suddenly halted. You stared at Seokmin with possibly the most shocked expression that he has ever seen on your face. Despite his first reflex to burst out laughing, he continued to stare at you with his relatively serious face. Your expression remained unchanged as you looked from the envelope in your hand back up to your childhood friend.
“Are you…serious?”
Seokmin nodded, “Totally.”
“Um…no, I think you’re playing me right now,” you said, letting out a slight nervous chuckle.
“You don’t understand,” Seokmin said, resting his hand on yours, “I’m a secret informant of Santa.”
“Have you been doing drugs?” you asked, ignoring the fluttering inside your stomach.
Seokmin rolled his eyes, “No, Y/N, I have not. Just write what you want for Christmas on a piece of paper, stick in the envelope, and then hand it back to me. I’ll send it to Santa for you.”
“Seokmin…Santa isn’t r—“
“Ssh!”
“But he isn’t—“
“Shush!”
“Seok—“
Seokmin placed a hand on your lips and a finger to his own, “Shush. Don’t say the ‘n’ and ‘r’ word together in the same sentence. Santa doesn’t like pessimistic people.”
“But…”
“If you keep insisting that he,” Seokmin thinned his lips and made a hand gesture for the two words he refused to say, “then he won’t give you your gifts.”
You stared at Seokmin in slight disbelief. No matter how much you adored the guy, you could not believe what he was pulling right now. Seokmin continued to stare at you, waiting for your response.
“I promise it’ll be worth it,” Seokmin said, his grin returning.
You sighed, attempting to hide the growing smile, and finally nodded. You placed the envelope carefully inside one of your more used folders, “I’ll write something later.”
“Don’t rush. You have until the twentieth.”
“Does Santa do express mail now?”
“Santa is magical,” Seokmin said, laughing, “He doesn’t need express mail.”
You watched as Seokmin stood, collected his coat as well as his phone and wallet. He waved a goodbye to you and you nodded, staring at him as he exited the store. You pulled the envelope out and stared at it, unsure of what to make of Seokmin’s strange words. With a sigh, you concluded that you’d write it just for fun and just to vent. You pulled out a sheet of notebook paper and began to scribble your thoughts and what you wanted as well as what you felt, thinking that this “Santa” would probably at least attempt to do something about it. After you finished, you folded it and carefully tucked it into the green envelope. You set it aside, putting a mental reminder on it that you will have to hand it to Seokmin when you see him later in the week.
“What’s that?”
Seokmin glanced up at Soonyoung, who was fiddling with the green envelope. Seokmin quickly took it from Soonyoung’s hands, “It’s mine.”
Soonyoung raised an eyebrow, “Oh…um…is it a love letter or something?”
“What? No?”
“Well, you seem pretty defensive so I just,” Soonyoung shrugged before settling down next to the younger male. “What is it?”
“It’s Y/N’s wish list,” Seokmin said, carefully opening it, “She gave it to me when we met up earlier.”
“Why did she make you a wish list? Doesn’t she always say to not get her anything?”
“I insisted this year, saying that Santa wanted to make some of her wishes come true,” just hearing the phrase come out from his own mouth, Seokmin felt like he wanted to gag just a tiny bit. Soonyoung, on the other hand, burst out laughing. “Ah, hyung, stop. It’s embarrassing enough for me to think about it again, I don’t need you laughing.”
Soonyoung apologized and quickly proceeded to ask what you had written.
“Mm…normal things…notebooks, pens—oh a new camera—hm…nothing…special,” Seokmin mumbled.
Soonyoung glanced at the ground and picked up the second sheet that had fallen out, “What about this?”
Seokmin looked at it. It was folded tightly in a small loop, suggesting that it was more important than the regular sheet of notebook paper. Seokmin took it and carefully in wrapped, taking special care for it to not rip.
“Dear ‘Santa’,
I’m not sure what Seokmin is trying to pull or who he is even going to give this to, but I suppose I’ll write something just to amuse him. I honestly don’t want much for Christmas this year; I don’t really even celebrate it. Exchanging gifts is weird to me and when I receive a gift I feel like I owe the other person something, so honestly I don’t want anything. But…maybe if Santa is real then I hope he’ll give me lots of luck. Physical things are easy to come by but relationships are more difficult to. I hope you’ll be able to give me the pleasure of continuing to be with Seokmin and maybe mend some of my relationships with my family members? If you can’t, then that’s also fine. I’m not expecting much (sorry if I sound too pessimistic). Oh! Also, I hope Lee Seokmin stays happy. He’s always been there to cheer me up but I’m not that good at expression myself so I might end up just hurting him more. This is what I really wish for and it feels nice to get it out.
Sincerely,
Y/N”
Seokmin sighed, “How can she be so sweet?”
Soonyoung glanced over with a small smile, “Why don’t you just fulfill her wish?”
Seokmin glanced back with a raised eyebrow.
“You know she’s had a crush on you for so long now and she says here that she ‘hopes Lee Seokmin stays happy’. Just ask her out!”
“What am I supposed to say? ‘I’m your present!’”
Soonyoung nodded, stroking his chin, “That’s not a bad idea.”
Seokmin resisted the urge to throw the envelope at him but Soonyoung laughed, saying that he was pretty serious. Soonyoung wrapped an arm over Seokmin’s shoulders while pulling him up.
“Let hyung teach you how to do it.”
“Hyung, you’ve only been a live one year more than me,” Seokmin said, reluctantly allowing Soonyoung to drag him along.
Soonyoung disregarded Seokmin’s comment and continued on talking. As Seokmin listened, he figured that maybe Soonyoung could be right.
“What’s this even for Seokmin?”
“It’s Christmas Eve!” Seokmin grinned, pulling you by the hand.
“It’s nearly twelve!” you said, wanting to curl up in your bed and sleep, “What are we? Three?”
“We did this all the time when we were younger,” Seokmin whined, “Just come with me, okay?”
“I never agreed to it even when we were younger,” you grumbled, “You kidnapped me.”
Seokmin chuckled. He stopped in front of the door and stood behind you, holding his hands over your eyes to make sure you didn’t see. He carefully opened the door and guided you in. His apartment was decorated nicely with Christmas lights, a comfy Christmas tree with simple decorations of pictures when you two were children among other things. Sitting in the middle of the living room was a very nervous Jisoo and his acoustic, along with an slightly agitated Jihoon and a completely excited Seungkwan and the ever angelic Jeonghan. Seokmin allowed you to see the scene before you and grinned brightly when your eyes widened and you inhaled your breath.
“Seokmin…what’s all this?”
“Your Christmas wish,” Seokmin said with a wide smile.
You lowered your voice, tugging at his sleeve slightly and looking at the strangers that were his friends, “I didn’t ask for a large performance.”
“I know,” Seokmin grinned, pulling away from your grip to take his place between Jihoon and Seungkwan.
You watched in a stunned silence as Jisoo began to gently strum the strings of his guitar, eyes concentrating to a spot on the floor. You listened as Seungkwan and Jeonghan began to harmonize, Jihoon taking the first verse of this acoustic arrangement. It was all beautiful and you could feel your cheeks heating up but it wasn’t until Seokmin began singing, his eyes trained only on you, that your cheeks felt as if they were on fire.
“I just want you for my own, more than you could ever know…make my wish come true. All I want for Christmas, is you.”
You laughed in amusement as the sound of bells came from the next room. You watched as Soonyoung came out, dragging along a couple other friends that you had never met. Soonyoung grinned brightly, smiling and greeting his friend while the other boys attempted to hide their faces out of sheer embarrassment. Jeonghan began to laugh as well, Seungkwan stuttering slightly to keep his laughter back before he continued on the next line.
“There is just one thing I need and I don’t care about the presents, underneath the Christmas tree,” Seungkwan stepped forward, Seokmin’s eyes widening as the younger boy stepped closer to you, taking your hand and making you dance a little.
“I don’t need to hang my stocking there upon the fireplace.”
You watched in amazement as Jisoo began to sing, his guitar playing becoming more enthusiastic with the jingle of the bells. At this point, the sweet serenade had turned into a comedic performance, just what Seokmin had planned. Jihoon remained in his seat, hiding his face in his hands as Seungcheol began his part that they had managed to arrange and stick in. You laughed as Seungcheol attempted to get Jihoon to join, but to no avail.
As the performance wrapped up, your sides and your cheeks hurt but the music quieted down and the jinglebell chorus retreated into the other rooms with giggles and laughter. It was quiet as Jisoo began the last couple lines, Seokmin taking a step forward and holding your hands.
“All I want for Christmas is you, baby.”
You grinned uncontrollably as Seokmin pulled you into a tight hug, “Merry Christmas! Do you like your present?”
You laughed and nodded, “But what does this have to do with my Christmas list?”
“You said you wanted to see me happy, didn’t you?” Seokmin grinned brightly.
You nodded.
“But…if you want that to last forever you’ll have to do one thing for me,” Seokmin said, staring at you seriously.
You glanced back behind him to see Jisoo and the rest retreating into the other room. You turned your attention back to Seokmin, “What is it?”
“Will you be my girlfriend?”
Your heated face was quite the sight. You looked a bit like Rudolph’s nose but you nodded anyway, trying to hide your embarrassment as Seokmin pulled you into an innocent kiss, the only background noise was the loud whooping and the obnoxious ringing of Christmas bells.
