hi there! i'm looking at adopting a beautiful samoyed puppy, and i've read quite a bit about their temperament and such, but i thought it might be a good idea to ask someone who knows the breed so well! What are they like? Are they a high maintenance dog? And do they get a long well with other animals like cats and dogs? How are they with training? Sorry for the long question but I really appreciate any advice you've got to offer!
Awesome! I’m so happy to hear that you’re doing proper research, that’s such an important step! They’re lovely dogs who get along great with other animals and kids (at least every one that I’ve met has, but I’m not an expert - just someone who has been around them)
The grooming requirements are fairly high maintenance, since you really have to stay on top of brushing and grooming so they don’t get tangled and matted. They were originally sled and herding dogs, so they have a lot of energy that needs to be expended, otherwise they go crazy and start ripping up furniture and stuff… but they’re super great if you can commit to daily walks and getting them tired out so they can be happy and calm.
They are known for being SUPER stubborn about training, and we essentially gave up on Skook being well trained. I know it’s really our fault, but we just couldn’t do it even with the help of trainers, so he’s not okay to be off leash in public and we can’t rely on commands to control him around food or other dogs.
I guess my advice would be to really, really think about how much time and energy you want to put into it on a daily basis. Honestly I’m not sure I would have gotten a Samoyed as a first dog if I had known the demands, even though I grew up with them (it’s different when it all falls on you) but Skookum is an awesome dog and I love him to pieces. Feel free to follow up if you have any more questions! :)
