so, can someone explain to me what this phenomenon is on tumblr? Some account follows me, usually some hazbin fan account or claimed "artist" account but has no art or original work actually posted, only reblogs of other artists (usually all ones I follow). The accounts are always less than 6mo old, and within 2 weeks of them following me, they send me a DM for some banal conversation that is usually pretty invasive, or just doesn't go anywhere. I inevitably block them because its weird and i feel like its a fake account, but what are they trying to accomplish?
anyone else getting sketchy looking sob stories asking for money in your DMs, or is it just me?
Bro you good? Did someone wreck you beforehand?
Imagine you didn't see this coming from your Tumblr DMs. Sorry @kingeden and @clevercorvidae for unintended last message leakage. (On Twitter, it's a lot of crypto and investment hellscape I wish didn't exist but fuck all.)
Hopefully I don't need to spend my spoons just to declutter these ungodly hellscape instead of writing posts over at the stack.
Shall I leak some of them for maximum pain for y'all?
This shit is so annoying
If you were wondering what was "wrong" with your DMs on Twitter, the answer is: nothing. Twitter, in an effort to cut down on the amount of DM spam has suspended the ability to send URLs in direct messages. Of course, Twitter doesn't tell you that (the error messages I've been getting on mobile Twitter imply a message containing a link is a duplicate or while those from mobile Hootsuite reek of DM jail). Fortunately, the folks over at TechCrunch have done some investigating and here's what we know so far. One caveat here: TechCrunch says the URL ban in DMs went into effect last night but I received a welcome DM from a new connection containing a URL this morning (about 4 hours ago). The new connection is not a verified account (no blue check) but they do appear to be a real person, not an RP character, and the welcome response seems to be automated. I verified the dms containing URLs were being blocked from both RP profiles and RL profiles, at least through the mobile versions. Neither does using a link shortener help. If the welcome message was not an aberration, it's intriguing to note that Twitter has decided typed messages sent individually are more likely to contain spam links that automated replies which are often sent in bulk. I am not a fan of DM spam but the way this ban was implemented gives the impression it was a knee-jerk reaction to something rather than a well planned and thoughtful response to the situation which makes me wonder what's really behind this maneuver not to mention whether the ban will be "permanent" for users unwilling to pay for the privilege of sending URLs in direct messages.
