SPOTLIGHT ON: A-PRECIS
David is a photography and design student attending Miami University of Ohio. David talks to Alright Darling about photography, his turn ons, and shares some of his favourite tumblrs.
Why ‘a-precis’?
It’s based off of a French term from the mid 18th century: “Précis”, which refers to a summary or abstract. Although it’s usually a summary of a text or speech, the concept was interesting to me. Since my blog is merely a small snippet of my taste, I thought it would be a fitting title.
Which photographers do you like?
I have to admit, I’ve never been much of a scholar and subsequently haven’t familiarized myself much with the work of others–something I really ought to do. Of course, I enjoy the work of Annie Leibovitz. Her portrait work is absolutely stunning. Ansel Adams’s landscape photography is also quite striking. Kevin Russ is a fairly new “photo celebrity” who’s work I am a fan of as well.
How big a part is photography in your life?
Photography is a fairly large part of my life, although I would like it to be bigger. I’ve been interested in photography since I was 9 or ten, and have been taking pictures ever since then. I’m currently one of the Co Photo Editors of my university’s fashion magazine, and am often hired to do gigs on the side.
How would you sum up your photographic style?
I would say “undefined”. That’s not an attempt to be edgy or evasive; I’m fairly unpolished, and haven’t quite landed with an aesthetic that I can claim as my own. As I progress with my work and become less haphazard with my editing and technical skills, I’m hoping to discover my calling and really land with a style that suits me.
What smell do you find most attractive on men?
Oh boy, this is a hard one. Nothing beats the smell of wood smoke, honestly. Cliché as it may be, guys smell best after a day hiking, climbing rocks, and sitting by a campfire.
what are your turn ons/fetishes?
Stocky, hairy guys are my forté, and if someone’s occupation falls into the line of teacher, professor, police officer, etc….well, that in itself is a big turn-on. That said, I’m not into roll-play. Not sure where the disconnect is there.
Are you working on any exciting projects right now? And whats next?
This coming semester I’ll have a senior project to complete so I’ve been brainstorming topics. Most of my work as of late has involved playing around with light, such as taking long-exposure shots in places with not much light. I plan on developing a more cohesive style soon that emulates the classic feel of 35mm colour film.
If you could photograph any celebrity, who would it be and how would you capture them? Style, setup, scenario, etc…
As inclined as I am to jump toward a nude shoot with Nick Offerman, I think I’d actually have to insist on getting something together with Jake Hagood (aka Who Is Fancy). As an up-and-coming musical artist and a member of the LGBTQ community, it would be rad to do a shoot with him and pick his brain a bit. I’m not sure what exactly I’d do for it, but there’d be lots of glitter.
What are some of your favourite tumblrs?
Well, barring yours (no ass-kissing, promise!), I’m a huge fan of symbear and lothar-zogg. I’m acquainted with both of them, but regardless I particularly enjoy their aesthetics. Also mothurs, triatic, alexwallbaum and surlyburly are the bee’s knees.
