What do you think Ohba’s reaction to the “aggressive top” bit was? (I’m assuming he had some final say in how the book was written, and we’ve seen in Platinum End that he has some rather… interesting views on gay people)

Do you think he was annoyed by it?

Maybe he was okay with the implication that a man liked another man because the guy saying that is the murderous antagonist (like a Hayes code situation)?

Did he tell Nisio Isin to “tone it down” or change the words so it didn’t read as “too gay”? (This came to mind when I saw this post breaking down the Japanese version)

Did he let it slide because it was an innuendo and could be interpreted as purely a joke?

Side question: Does Beyond actually mean what he’s saying, or is he just trying to get a reaction out of Naomi?

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done to understand a character in your fandom?

I’ll start:

This was for a character from the canonical Death Note spin off light novel (Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases) named Beyond Birthday

We hardly know anything about the guy but we do know he’s 1) a funny cringefail loser boy and 2) a HUGE fan of the shoujo series Akazukin Chacha

Because there’s no information about what he’s genuinely like (outside of his rare passionate ramblings), I decided to look into Chacha to better understand him by analyzing why he might like a certain character he particularly name drops

I found the anime and genuinely feel in love with the series (it was a very cute and funny show) and wanted to see what the manga was like. (The manga and anime differs because the anime was trying to compete with Sailor Moon so it made the show into a magical girl transformation type series while the manga was moreso a slice of life story with a girl who is trying to become a magician)

However, I learned there was no English version of the manga (most likely because 1) it would be difficult to translate since the main gimmick is Japanese puns and 2) it was from the 90s), so I bought the original manga in Japanese. I learned there was a spin off series called Akazukin Chacha N (also only in Japanese) that’s pretty much a modern day AU and got that, too

Now, I’m trying to learn Japanese so I can translate the manga. I also created an archive blog for the series because I’m genuinely invested in preserving this series’s history (especially since it’s not well known in the West)

And it all started because of a character named Beyond fuckin Birthday from a Death Note spin off light novel…
