Yet to wrap my head around 5e lategame balance. An avg enemy (28 STR CR 12) has +12 attack bonus. A fighter with a very rare plate and defence fighting style has 21 AC. There is a 60% probability to hit! Against a sorcerer with bracers of defence and 16 DEX, AC 18, the hit probability jumps to 75%!
As pc AC and most saving throw bonuses hit a ceiling early in game, but enemy statistics grow, the game becomes oddly harder. Players are challenged by enemies of CR often times 10 levels higher than theirs, ergo creatures with proficiency bonuses and ability scores vastly exceeding theirs. If the sorcerer can’t dodge the ancient dragon’s breath, why even roll?
Maybe it’s a glaring issue for me, like I play a lot of rpgs that have milder progression. I don’t want to compare apples to oranges. D&D Isn’t Lancer nor Fabula or Daggerheart, but I hoped D&D 50th anniversary edition - now D&D 2024 - now D&D 5.5e — had at least tried something.
